Have you ever wondered why the velodrome is often referred to as a "bowl-shaped arena"? Those who participated in the Jockey Club Track Cycling Community Engagement Campaign might just have the answer!
Hosted by the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China Limited (“CAHK”), the 2024 UCI Track Nations Cup Hong Kong, China was held at the Hong Kong Velodrome in Tseung Kwan O from 15 to 17 March 2024. This event marked the second leg of the three-race UCI Track Nations Cup series. The Hong Kong series was crucial for athletes looking to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, drawing nearly 350 elite cyclists from almost 40 countries and regions. The event was recognised with the prestigious “M” Mark by the Major Sports Events Committee, signifying its status as an intense, spectacular, and signature event in the territory's sports calendar. The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the Official Community Partner of the Track Nations Cup.
Throughout the UCI Track Nations Cup, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team supported guided tours for three consecutive days, sharing insights about track cycling. Led by professional coaches, over 40 CARE volunteers and their family members or friends facilitated the guided tours, benefiting over 300 students and community members from various schools and non-governmental organisations. On 17 March 2024, Hong Kong Jockey Club Head of External Affairs Freely Cheng joined the guided tour led by track cycling icon, Mr Wong Kam-po, with a group of 30 students from the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) Kornhill Centre assisted by CARE volunteers. They not only learned more about track cycling but also had hands-on experiences to experience the joy of track cycling and cheer for the Hong Kong team during the races.
To bring more diversity to the UCI Track Nations Cup, an Expo cum Carnival was held at an outdoor area of the Velodrome during the event, offering bicycle-themed games, activities and exhibition booths. Additionally, the CARE Balloon Twisting Team delighted the public by creating and distributing lovely bicycle or horse-shaped balloons to the carnival participants.
