Parental loss can be particularly traumatic for children and youth and alter the course of their life. If bereaved youngsters do not receive adequate support, the grief they experience may result in maladaptive coping strategies. Extensive academic research has shown that bereaved children are more susceptible to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, may show lower self-esteem and confidence, have poorer academic performance, and are more likely to experience drinking and substance use problems compared to other children.
According to data from Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics Department, as of 2021 there were over 8,000 dependent youngsters below the age of 18 living with widowed single parents, many of whom come from underprivileged families.
While existing social services primarily emphasise crisis intervention or immediate assistance, there is a pressing need to integrate specialised bereavement services for children and youth with developmental support.
Established and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a donation of HK$138 million, and in collaboration with operation partner the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, the JC Echoes of Love Fund developed a positive trajectory framework for children and youth (“C&Y”), with a professional team of dedicated Trajectory Development Managers (“TDM”) to provide bereavement support services, and collaborates to design personalised development plans for C&Y. To facilitate the implementation of these plans, the Fund offers a monthly stipend for a maximum of five years or until the beneficiary reaches the age of 18. The project will benefit 1,000 bereaved C&Y and their caregivers.
