For the Club, environmental sustainability is about much more than being a responsible corporate citizen. We act continuously for the betterment of our society.
By optimising our resource efficiency, we can improve our business performance and help keep the Club competitive and sustainable. By reducing our carbon footprint and minimising waste through reduction, reuse and recycling, we can set an example to the community at large, making full use of the Club’s many long-standing community partnerships to help create a greener, better Hong Kong for future generations.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club (the “Club”) is pleased to present its Environmental Report 2021, a biennial report covering the financial years 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2021.
Being an organisation whose sole purpose is the betterment of society, the Club is working hard to reduce its environmental impact and to contribute towards a greener future for all. Indeed with climate change accelerating, the Club is devoting more resources to reducing carbon emissions, including through investing in renewable energy.
For the long-term, the Club remains focused on improving energy use, waste reduction and water efficiency. The Club’s overall carbon emissions in 2020/21 reduced by 9.8% on 2018/19 and 15% when compared with the baseline year of 2009/10. This was despite the opening of Conghua Racecourse in 2018. To reduce its carbon footprint, the Club invested in energy-efficient systems, IT solutions and transport. It is on target for all passenger vehicles to be 100% electric or hybrid by July 2022. Almost 200 electric vehicle charging points have been installed across the Club. This year, solar panels were installed at Happy Valley Racecourse infield car park, with a target of generating about 3 million kWh of electricity annually by July 2025 at over 67 of the Club’s rooftops in Hong Kong.
Municipal water usage in Hong Kong and the Mainland was up 27% on 2018/19 reflecting increased operations at Conghua Racecourse and the opening of Happy Valley New Clubhouse. At Happy Valley Racecourse, the Club plans to use a portion of harvested water from the Drainage Services Department’s subterranean storage tank system for track irrigation starting in FY22/23. Mainland operations have also made greater use of recycled water, with recycled water up 8% year on year.
This report is prepared with reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards: Core Option and records the Club’s performance and initiatives in the areas of environmental and resource management. It complements and should be read in conjunction with the Club’s Annual Report.
