Racing Incident Report

After arriving in the saddling stalls, it was noted MIGHTY HUGO had shifted its left hind plate. This plate was reset. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. On jumping, CRYSTAL bounded in the air. When the gates opened, STABLE MAIL bounded in the air and lost a considerable amount of ground. Shortly after the start, BETTER BOY was bumped by DR MORE which shifted out after making contact with CRYSTAL. In the early stages, DETERMINATION proved very difficult to settle, near the 1400 Metres got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SHARKI and at the 1200 Metres became badly unbalanced and got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GOLDEN SUN. Then near the 1000 Metres, while continuing to prove difficult to settle, DETERMINATION got its head up and was checked when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SHARKI which was carried in slightly by PRETTY TRIO. Near the 200 Metres, STABLE MAIL, which was commencing to close the race off, was shifted to the inside of BETTER BOY to go forward, however, was unable to obtain clear running inside that horse and outside CRYSTAL and because of this was not properly tested. Apprentice H W Lai (FLYING BISHOP) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in 5th or 6th position if possible. He said in an endeavour to follow these instructions after jumping well he immediately took hold of FLYING BISHOP in the hope that runners from the outside would cross and provide him with some cover. He said he continued to take hold of his mount until after the 1200 Metres, at that time PRETTY TRIO went forward of him and he was hopeful of being able to obtain a position with cover behind that horse if SHARKI which was racing to his inside shifted to the fence. He said this cover eventuated near the 800 Metres. D Whyte (SHARKI) said his mount travelled comfortably in the run, however, when asked to improve after straightening failed to respond to his riding. He did point out SHARKI previously had not performed well when racing on a rain affected track. He said whilst today's track was not rain affected it was somewhat shifty and this might have contributed to the performance of SHARKI. SHARKI was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of SHARKI after the race did not show any significant findings. G Schofield (MIGHTY HUGO) said when he was unable to obtain a position with cover in the early stages the horse raced too keenly and as a consequence continued to travel wide and without cover throughout. He added MIGHTY HUGO was not suited by the manner in which the race was run in that it turned out to be a sprint home. MIGHTY HUGO was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MIGHTY HUGO after the race did not show any significant findings. S Dye (CRYSTAL) said the horse raced a little further back than intended as a result of being caught behind SHARKI and FLYING BISHOP in the early stages. He said the early tempo of the race was very steady and then when the pace quickened near the 400 Metres CRYSTAL was left flat-footed. He said the horse was keeping on only fairly and was steadied near the 100 Metres when DELIGHTFUL WIN shifted out from the inside. He said in his opinion the poor performance of CRYSTAL was attributable to the manner in which today's race was run. CRYSTAL was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, CRYSTAL was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, CRYSTAL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOLDEN SUN and DR WELL were sent for sampling.
