Racing Incident Report

LOK WAH TREASURE left the gates very awkwardly and threw its head about. In the early stages, KING HORSE over-raced and would not settle. For some distance near the 1500 Metres, ASPIRATION was awkward when close to the heels of BELLAGIO and tight inside VICTORY MOUNT. Rounding the turn, FULL THROTTLE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ARRIBA-ARRIBA and tight inside BELLAGIO. When asked about the improved performance of TEMMOKU as compared with its last run on the All Weather Track on 3 November 2001, Mr T W Leung, trainer, said on that occasion TEMMOKU had drawn wide and was obliged to travel off the track throughout. The horse's next start at Happy Valley had again drawn badly, covered a lot of ground, but in all the circumstances had run quite well. Tonight from a gate towards the inside TEMMOKU had enjoyed a much better run in the race and in his opinion this was the sole reason for the improved run. He said in the lead up to the runs on 3 November 2001 and on 21 November 2001 TEMMOKU had been doing well as it was going into tonight's race. He said he was reasonably confident of success tonight considering its two previous runs and the better draw tonight. When asked about the poor performance of CONNOISSEUR'S BET, D Whyte said the horse had a hard run on 7 October 2001 when it was successful and he understands the trainer gave the horse time to recover and regain the weight it lost after that hard run. D Whyte said he had been working CONNOISSEUR'S BET in the lead up to tonight's race, this was satisfactory and it was expected CONNOISSEUR'S BET would run well. He said the intention from a good gate was to lead, CONNOISSEUR'S BET jumped very awkwardly and to get towards the front he had to make a lot more use of the horse than he wished. He said CONNOISSEUR'S BET travelled satisfactorily in a forward position, but at about the 700 Metres when put pressure did not respond and shortly after that he knew CONNOISSEUR'S BET would not be figuring in the finish of the race. He said over the concluding stages he was very concerned with the manner in which CONNOISSEUR'S BET was stretching out and as the horse was well beaten he eased it down. The performance of CONNOISSEUR'S BET, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CONNOISSEUR'S BET was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
