Racing Incident Report

Near the 200 Metres, as E Legrix (HONEST DRAGON) was pulling his whip through, he momentarily dropped his near side rein. In the run to the winning post, HONEST DRAGON had a tendency to shift out towards GOOD FRIENDS. F Coetzee (HAPPY CHAMP) said over about the last 200 Metres he was concerned with the horse's action. Accordingly he did not ride it right out to the finish as he normally would. After the race, HAPPY CHAMP was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said he was unable to find any abnormalities. Before racing again, HAPPY CHAMP will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. When questioned, A Marcus (THE GREATEST) explained from the outside gate tonight it had been decided to ride the horse "for luck". He said THE GREATEST left the gates satisfactorily, he immediately took hold of it and shifted across behind other runners to take up a position near the rail, then as the race settled down although on the rail he settled in a position well back. He said he had hoped the race would be run at a fair speed and if it was he intended to try and improve along the inside, when travelling along the back he became aware where he was positioned this was not going to happen, therefore he shifted out to try and go forward, but as WISH COME TRUE improved on its outside, he was unable to improve until near the 400 Metres. He did go on to say with a better draw THE GREATEST would have been ridden in an entirely different way. The explanations submitted by A Marcus on this occasion were accepted.
