Racing Incident Report
UNIQUE JOYOUS was slow to begin.
PACKING DRAGON shifted out at the start and bumped EASY HEDGE which was taken out onto SMART BOY.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, SKY KING failed to muster speed and near the 1500 Metres got its head up when momentarily crowded for room inside UNICORN (K C Leung) which shifted in. K C Leung was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
VANILLA and AMAZING AGILITY were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1000 Metres, METALLIC STAR got its head up when travelling keenly and awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEAUTY LOVE.
KIRAM had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the riding of D Whyte (KIRAM), 6th placegetter, over the concluding stages did not affect the horse's finishing position, he was nonetheless reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels all the way to the end of the race where circumstances permit.
When questioned, B Prebble stated that in discussions with Mr W Y So, the trainer of SMART BOY, it was felt that today's race would be run at a good tempo and that, from the outside barrier, he may be able to obtain a position behind the speed with cover. He said having these instructions he allowed SMART BOY to begin and, as anticipated the tempo of the race was good due to a number of horses being ridden to take up forward positions. He said however that due to the make-up of the field in the early stages and, in particular the positioning of PACKING DRAGON which began very well also from a wide gate, he was left racing very wide. He said he attempted to shift in behind HAPPY PLACE after the 1400 Metres, however, due to EASY HEDGE being ridden along to his inside, he was unable to obtain this position. He said when PACKING DRAGON improved its position in advance of HAPPY PLACE, SMART BOY was then left racing four wide and without cover and for this reason he allowed the horse to continue forward in the hope that it would be able to shift in closer to the rail. He added after the 900 Metres he anticipated that BEAUTY LOVE would be steadied to permit SMART BOY to shift in which would have allowed him to race one horse off the rail outside ABLE DEED, however, when that horse continued to hold its position, SMART BOY was then left racing three wide and without cover for the remainder of the race.
When questioned, C Y Ho stated that, as is usual, he was asked to take up a forward position on BEAUTY LOVE. He said travelling along the Back Straight he positioned BEAUTY LOVE about a half length behind ABLE DEED so as to ensure that BEAUTY LOVE was able to settle and did not travel keenly. He said approaching the 900 Metres SMART BOY improved to his outside and he initially intended to allow SMART BOY to continue on rather than be caught wide in a speed battle inside that horse and to the outside of ABLE DEED. He added passing the 900 Metres SMART BOY shifted in and raced tight outside of BEAUTY LOVE and when SMART BOY was then taken out to relieve the tightening, BEAUTY LOVE commenced to travel keenly and he was unable to steady BEAUTY LOVE to get cover behind SMART BOY. He said because of the manner in which BEAUTY LOVE travelled after the 900 Metres and due to the tempo of the race, BEAUTY LOVE was then not able to finish off the race and weakened in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY LOVE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, K Teetan stated that after obtaining the lead in the early stages, ABLE DEED initially travelled well, however, when BEAUTY LOVE and SMART BOY improved to the outside of ABLE DEED after the 900 Metres, his mount commenced to travel keenly and consequently did not finish off the race and weakened noticeably in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of ABLE DEED immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of HAPPY PLACE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse's trachea.
EASY HEDGE, AMAZING AGILITY and UNICORN were sent for sampling.
