Racing Incident Report
On arrival at the Start, the tongue tie applied to PENNY LANE was refitted.
NUMERO UNO began awkwardly.
From wide barriers, CROATIA and FLORAL MAN were taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
Near the 850 Metres, GREAT PEGASUS was checked after improving into tight running between ETERNAL GAINS and LUFFY which, after shifting out slightly, then shifted back in. No further action was taken.
At the 400 Metres, OSCAR MIRACLE was steadied and became unbalanced when attempting a run between HIGH SPEED METRO and EAGLE KING where there was insufficient room.
AMAZING GIFT had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Approaching and passing the 300 Metres, OSCAR MIRACLE got its head on the side and lay out and in doing so bumped EAGLE KING on a number of occasions. After this, OSCAR MIRACLE continued to lay out.
D Whyte (GREAT PEGASUS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of CHAMPION RANGER, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 27 March 2014 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting on Wednesday, 19 March 2014. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey Whyte’s good race riding record during the current racing season.
Over the final 100 Metres, AMAZING GIFT was shifted out to obtain clear running.
Over the concluding stages, NUMERO UNO and PENNY LANE raced tight.
In the Straight, GREAT PEGASUS lay in under pressure.
Throughout the race, EAGLE KING travelled wide and without cover.
After the race, M Chadwick reported that FLORAL MAN hung in in the Straight.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of OSCAR MIRACLE, A Suborics stated that, from an inside barrier, he was able to position OSCAR MIRACLE behind the speed as instructed. He said OSCAR MIRACLE travelled well in the early and middle stages as it did at its last start when successful. He said after becoming unbalanced when disappointed for running in the early part of the Straight, OSCAR MIRACLE shifted ground on a number of occasions in the Straight and weakened noticeably over the final 200 Metres. He added he had ridden OSCAR MIRACLE in some work since its last start success and this work, in his opinion, had been pleasing. Trainer P F Yiu stated that OSCAR MIRACLE had done well since its last start success and a forward showing was expected today. He said after considering the manner in which OSCAR MIRACLE weakened out of the race in the Straight when racing greenly, he felt that the horse may benefit from a freshen-up as it is a three year old having its first racing preparation. He said accordingly he will advise the owners of OSCAR MIRACLE of his intention to give it a let-up following its disappointing performance. A veterinary inspection of OSCAR MIRACLE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of OSCAR MIRACLE, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, OSCAR MIRACLE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
PENNY LANE and NUMERO UNO were sent for sampling.
