Racing Incident Report

After being loaded, EURO POWER became very fractious and as the start was effected lifted its front feet off the ground and consequently lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, EURO POWER will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. Apprentice T H So (MR VIGOROUS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 1000 Metres he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount from shifting in when not clear of GLENEALY STAR, causing that horse to be taken in across the rightful running of FIRST IN COMMAND which as a result was checked and in turn was taken in onto IMPERIAL ROME which lost its running when crowded for room between FIRST IN COMMAND and ULTIMATE WINNERS. Apprentice So was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday, 22 April 2012 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting on Sunday, 15 April 2012. Passing the 1000 Metres, GLENEALY STAR was checked after racing tight inside MR VIGOROUS for some distance. Approaching the 800 Metres, GLENEALY STAR shifted out marginally when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MR VIGOROUS and in doing so made contact with MY GOAL on a number of occasions, resulting in that horse becoming unbalanced. Near the 200 Metres, GOOD STRIKE bumped FRESH AIR and had to be steadied when disappointed for running to the outside of IMPERIAL ROME. A short distance after this, GOOD STRIKE had to be eased when awkwardly placed on the heels of IMPERIAL ROME. After the 50 Metres, FIRST IN COMMAND was steadied to avoid the heels of MR VIGOROUS (Apprentice T H So) which shifted out. Apprentice So was advised to exercise more care. When questioned, M Chadwick (ALL VICTORY) said that he had been asked to ride the horse in a forward position if possible from barrier 11. He said he rode ALL VICTORY along out of the barriers, however, shortly after the start he formed the opinion that he would have to make considerable use of ALL VICTORY to go forward as instructed as a number of horses were being aggressively ridden to his inside to take up forward positions. He said for this reason he elected, shortly after the start, to shift ALL VICTORY across behind runners and obtain a position closer to the rail as he felt that had he have continued to endeavour to obtain a forward position on ALL VICTORY, the horse would likely to have been left racing wide. He added he was also mindful of the fact that ALL VICTORY had raced well at its first run this season when successful after being ridden in about a midfield position. When questioned regarding the improved performance of FRESH AIR, Trainer Y S Tsui stated that the horse’s form had been very disappointing since it was found to have a substantial amount of blood in its trachea after running second at Happy Valley on 6 April 2011. He said as FRESH AIR had been racing disappointingly this season, since its most recent start on 19 February 2012, he had added a hood to the horse’s gear in an attempt to have it more settled in its work. He said he had also varied the track work of FRESH AIR by taking the horse to the Penfold Park bridle path in the lead up to tonight’s race and by generally stepping up its track work. He said whilst the horse’s track work had improved, he did not consider it to be a winning chance tonight, however, he did advise the owners that, in his opinion, the horse would race better and gave it a chance of placing in tonight’s race. Mr Tsui was advised that now that FRESH AIR had found winning form, he would be expected to do all in his power for the horse to race consistently in the near future. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ULTIMATE WINNERS, B Prebble said that, from barrier 1, he was able to obtain a good position throughout the run behind the leader, FREE AND EASY. He said although ULTIMATE WINNERS appeared to be travelling well, in his opinion, the horse was under pressure at the 500 Metres to maintain its position behind FREE AND EASY. He said he commenced to place the horse under pressure rounding the Home Turn, however, ULTIMATE WINNERS, which was not able to initially obtain clear running behind FREE AND EASY and inside DR SUPER, did not respond to his riding. He said he continued to ride his mount along in the early part of the Straight, however, ULTIMATE WINNERS commenced to give ground and for this reason he put the whip away and continued to ride the horse hands and heels. He added he was not able to offer any explanation for the horse’s disappointing performance tonight. A veterinary inspection of ULTIMATE WINNERS after the race did not show any significant findings. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of DR SUPER, D Whyte stated that although his mount appeared to travel well in the early stages to cross to race outside the leader, FREE AND EASY, he had to make some use of the horse to obtain a forward position. He said, in his opinion, because of this DR SUPER was then not able to finish off its race. A veterinary inspection of DR SUPER after the race did not show any significant findings. DR SUPER, FRESH AIR and GLENEALY STAR were sent for sampling.
<29/3/2012 Additional Veterinary Report> The Clinical Veterinary Surgeon reported that GOOD STRIKE was lame in the right front leg on the morning after racing. Before being allowed to race again, GOOD STRIKE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
