Racing Incident Report

GOLDEN BOY and SOHNA bumped at the start. JUGGERNAUT knuckled over at the start and a short distance later shifted out, resulting in TRAVEL GUIDE and REAL DRAGON being taken wider. Near the 1300 Metres, SOHNA shifted in and became unbalanced when awkwardly placed outside the heels of JUN HUA. Approaching the 600 Metres, BUMPER STRIKE was checked away from the heels of REAL DRAGON (M Chadwick) which shifted out. M Chadwick was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes every effort to prevent his mounts from shifting ground. After the 600 Metres, VIVA GUY was left racing wide and without cover. In the early part of the Straight, GREAT SHOW had difficulty obtaining clear running. Throughout the race, TRAVEL GUIDE travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, Z Purton stated that from barrier 11, he had been instructed to ride JOLLY WONGCHOY quietly as there was considerable speed drawn to the inside of JOLLY WONGCHOY and it was felt that considerable use would have to be made of the horse in the early stages to overcome the wide barrier. He said it was felt that the amount of use that would have to be made of JOLLY WONGCHOY would result in the horse not being able to close off the race. He did say that when ridden quietly JOLLY WONGCHOY finished off the race quite well. When questioned, B Prebble stated that due to the anticipated quick tempo of the race he was instructed to take PEPPERMINT across behind runners shortly after the start from barrier 9. He said he was able to obtain a good position on PEPPERMINT until after the 800 Metres at which time the race changed complexion. He said as a result of this PEPPERMINT was left racing in a four wide position albeit that the horse had cover. He added that PEPPERMINT made the turn after the 600 Metres and the Home Turn awkwardly and then took some time to get balanced in the Straight. He said after becoming balanced, PEPPERMINT finished off the race fairly for a horse which was having its first run at the course. He said, in his opinion, PEPPERMINT would benefit from the experience of having raced at Happy Valley tonight. A veterinary inspection of PEPPERMINT and REAL DRAGON after the race did not show any significant findings. PEPPERMINT, JUN HUA and GREAT SHOW were sent for sampling.
