Racing Incident Report
J Lloyd (FORTUNE WINNER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that shortly after the start he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of BEST NOODLE, causing that horse to be checked and lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. J Lloyd was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday, 17 October 2011 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday, 9 October 2011. Approaching and passing the 1000 Metres, MARK GOOD proved difficult to settle and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of HAPPY MASTER. Rounding the Home Turn, HAPPY SCORE lost ground when held up for clear running behind BAITIWU. Near the 200 Metres, HAPPY SCORE was steadied when disappointed for running between HAPPY MASTER and SPLENDID CHAMPION. MARK GOOD hung out throughout the race. Also throughout the race, SPLENDID CHAMPION travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, Apprentice C Y Ho stated that he had been instructed, from the outside barrier, to ride PRIVATE ROAD positively in the early stages if the horse began well, however, if the horse began only fairly, he should take it in across behind runners and obtain a position with cover. He said whilst PRIVATE ROAD began with the field, QUANTUM EXPRESS was hard ridden to his inside and SPLENDID CHAMPION began very well and he felt that it was a better option at that time to take PRIVATE ROAD in across behind runners rather than being caught wide. He said when he did this, PRIVATE ROAD immediately came off the bridle and despite being vigorously ridden along refused to stretch out. He added he continued to ride PRIVATE ROAD along throughout the race to have the horse pick up the bit including using the whip on it on a number of occasions, however, despite his efforts PRIVATE ROAD continued to refuse to join the field and was a distant last throughout the race. Trainer C Fownes confirmed that he had given two sets of instructions to Apprentice Ho which was his usual pattern when he had horses drawn wide from the 1650 Metre starting point on the All Weather Track due to the relatively short run to the first turn. He said that PRIVATE ROAD had worked well in the lead up to today’s race and he was not able to offer any reason for the horse refusing to stretch out in today’s race. A veterinary inspection of PRIVATE ROAD after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of PRIVATE ROAD, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, PRIVATE ROAD will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BAITIWU, W M Lai stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse in the box seat as was the case when the horse was successful over the course and distance last season. He said after obtaining a good position behind EASY JOB passing the 1400 Metres, EASY JOY was then steadied by its rider to allow horses outside it to improve and this resulted in BAITIWU racing slightly further back in the field than had been intended. He said despite this BAITIWU did not travel well during the race and came under pressure to hold its position passing the 700 Metres. He added after this, despite being ridden along with the whip, BAITIWU did not respond to his riding and was most disappointing in the manner in which it gave ground in the Straight. Trainer C S Shum said that when the horse was successful over the course and distance, it had carried a light weight and the race had been run on a wet slow surface. He said as a result of that win, the horse now has to carry significantly more weight in its races. He said, in his opinion, he could attribute the horse’s disappointing performance to these factors. A veterinary inspection of BAITIWU after the race did not show any significant findings. The Stewards considered the performance of BAITIWU, a favourite for today’s race, unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BAITIWU will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BAITIWU, FORTUNE WINNER and GOLDEN TREASURE were sent for sampling.
