Racing Incident Report
BLEDISLOE began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. GOOD FORTUNE was slow to begin and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between MANY GAINS and YOUNG TURBO which shifted in. GOODVIEW SUCCESSOR was slow to begin. After this, GOODVIEW SUCCESSOR was ridden along to take up a forward position, however, throughout the race travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. Rounding the turn passing the 850 Metres, GOOD FORTUNE and YOUNG TURBO made contact, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. For some distance approaching and passing the 800 Metres, RACING LEGEND proved difficult to settle and was checked away from the heels of BROTHERS IN ARMS. From on straightening until near the 150 Metres, BLEDISLOE was not able to obtain clear running. Passing the 400 Metres, SOMETHING SPECIAL was crowded for room inside GENERAL SMILE which shifted in. A short distance later, SOMETHING SPECIAL was checked when further crowded for room between BLEDISLOE and GENERAL SMILE which shifted in after becoming awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOODVIEW SUCCESSOR which shifted in when giving ground abruptly. Near the 250 Metres, GOODVIEW SUCCESSOR, which was continuing to give ground, was bumped by GENERAL SMILE which at this time shifted to the outside of BROTHERS IN ARMS to obtain clear running. When questioned regarding his riding out of HORSESHOE FORTUNE in the Straight, B Prebble stated that he used the whip in the backhand motion on a number of occasions leading up to the 150 Metres at which time he reverted to use the whip in the forehand motion. He said that when ridden in this manner, in his opinion, HORSESHOE FORTUNE was finishing off the race as best as it was able today and he had tested it fully. The Stewards advised B Prebble that his riding of HORSESHOE FORTUNE, in particular the vigour he showed on the horse in the early part of the Straight, had come under notice and he should ride his mounts in such a fashion so as to leave no room for query. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that HORSESHOE FORTUNE had lost its right hind plate. CROWN WITNESS and YOUNG TURBO were sent for sampling.
