Racing Incident Report
NOBLE SILENCE was withdrawn on raceday morning on veterinary advice (lame right fore). Before being allowed to race again, NOBLE SILENCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On arrival at the Start, SOLDIER, which had been kicked by another runner in the region of the right thigh, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. As the start was effected, FLYING CHINA lifted its front feet off the ground and then shortly after the start was bumped by SHARP BOY which shifted out after beginning awkwardly. After this, SHARP BOY got its head up on a number of occasions and proved difficult to ride. Then rounding the 800 Metre turn, SHARP BOY again got its head up, proved difficult to settle and raced ungenerously. SHARP BOY then continued to race ungenerously in the Straight and weakened badly. The racing manners of SHARP BOY were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SHARP BOY will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend. Approaching the first turn, SOLDER got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SUPER GENTLEMAN. Passing the 1000 Metres, DEVON JOY shifted out and bumped KINGIFLY which became unbalanced. After this, KINGIFLY, which was racing wide, was allowed to stride forward, however, continued to race wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. When questioned regarding his riding of AMNESTY, C Soumillon stated that he had been instructed, with the increase in weight today, to obtain a position with cover. He said it was felt that this would be in a position around midfield. He said AMNESTY began well, he briefly considered riding the horse along to take up a position in midfield, however, he soon became aware that SHARP BOY was racing erratically to his inside and obtaining a forward position. He said as he did not want AMNESTY to be racing on the outside of that horse, he elected to allow SHARP BOY to improve underneath AMNESTY and shifted across behind that horse. He said passing the 1200 Metres AMNESTY was racing to the outside of DEVON JOY which itself was also proving difficult to settle. He said as he felt that AMNESTY’s chances would be harmed were he to remain racing outside of that horse, he elected to steady further back on AMNESTY in order to obtain a position with cover. He said due to these factors AMNESTY got further back in the field than had been intended. Trainer C S Shum confirmed the instructions given to C Soumillon were to obtain cover on the horse. He said with the increase in weight from 105 lbs to 130 lbs, he did not believe it would be in AMNESTY’s best interests for the horse to be ridden along from barrier 11 to take up a forward position. He said for this reason he asked Jockey Soumillon to obtain cover on AMNESTY if possible. He said however, that due to the circumstances of the race, AMNESTY was ridden much further back than had been intended. He said although the pace of the race made it difficult for AMNESTY to finish off the race today, regardless he was somewhat disappointed with AMNESTY’s failure to run on. He said for this reason he would consider giving AMNESTY a break before its next race start. When questioned regarding BEAUTIFUL CHOICE being ridden back in the field today, J Victoire stated that as the horse had weakened badly when being ridden in a forward position from barrier 8 at its most recent start, from barrier 12 today, he had been instructed to see if it would finish off the race. He said although the pace of the race made it difficult for horses coming from behind to finish off the race, BEAUTIFUL CHOICE ran its best race today for some time and he was pleased with the manner in which it was able to run to the line. A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY EXPRESS and AMNESTY after the race did not show any significant findings. TRAVEL KING, EIGHT PLUS NINE and SOLDIER were sent for sampling. Following the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on TRAVEL KING at the request of Trainer A S Cruz. The Veterinary Officer said this examination revealed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse’s trachea.
