Racing Incident Report
At declaration time, C W Wong was declared as the rider of both LOCAL POWER and YUE LU TREASURE. It was established that C W Wong had a firm commitment to ride YUE LU TREASURE. As such, the Stewards permitted W M Lai to be substituted as the rider of LOCAL POWER. For this declaration error, Trainer C H Yip was fined $2,000. YUE LU TREASURE was withdrawn on 5.12.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (sore wither wound) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter FORTUNE HAVEN (D Beadman). Before being allowed to race again, YUE LU TREASURE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. AMAZING CHOICE and MIGHTY SUN bumped at the start, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. After this, MIGHTY SUN travelled wide and without cover until passing the 1000 Metres. TELECOM SUPER STAR and AMPLE GAINS were slow to begin. Apprentice K W Leung (MIGHTY SUN), who was riding his second winner in Hong Kong in this race, was warned against the practice of celebratory gestures prior to the finishing line. When questioned, D Beadman stated that the instructions had been to ride the horse in a forward position if possible. He said passing the winning post on the first occasion he had hoped that WHATABOB would shift over to the fence which would allow him to obtain a position behind GOLDEN TREASURE with cover. He added however when WHATABOB continued to remain racing one horse off the fence, FORTUNE HAVEN was left racing three wide and without cover, therefore he allowed the horse to stride forward and race outside the leader. He said, in his opinion, FORTUNE HAVEN was not suited by being ridden in this manner as the horse came under pressure prior to the Home Turn and continued to yield ground in the Straight. Trainer J Moore confirmed the instructions issued to D Beadman. He said, from an outside barrier, it was felt that the horse may have been caught wide and he felt to offset this, it was decided to be positive early and endeavour to race in a forward position. He said that, in retrospect, the horse’s disappointing performance today was due to the use made of FORTUNE HAVEN in the early and middle stages. A veterinary inspection of WHATABOB and FORTUNE HAVEN after the race did not show any significant findings. GOLDEN TREASURE, MIGHTY SUN and NEEDLES AND THREAD were sent for sampling. <7/12/2009 Additional Veterinary Report> FORTUNE HAVEN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison who said at that time there were no significant findings. FORTUNE HAVEN was again examined by the Clinical Veterinary Surgeon at the stables of Trainer J Moore this morning. He said at this time an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse’s trachea. Before being allowed to race again, FORTUNE HAVEN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
