Racing Incident Report

WATCH WHAT HAPPENS began awkwardly and lost a considerable amount of ground at the start. CONGRATS, which began awkwardly, and BROM BROM were both steadied when crowded for room shortly after the start between NOBLE MAN and WHATABOB, both of which shifted ground. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, REAL SPECIAL was steadied away from the heels of FLUKE (H W Lai) which shifted in when not clear. H W Lai was reprimanded and advised to be sufficiently clear in future. BROM BROM, which was following, was shifted out in consequence and bumped CONGRATS. Approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion, WATCH WHAT HAPPENS proved difficult to settle and became unbalanced on a number of occasions. When questioned regarding his riding of DORDENMA in the early and middle stages, Apprentice M L Yeung stated that he had been instructed to shift to the fence on the horse in the early stages and then obtain cover. He said accordingly passing the winning post on the first occasion he commenced to steady DORDENMA to allow NOBLE MAN to cross. He said when he did this, DORDENMA proved difficult to restrain and raced fiercely for some distance. He added that although he believed the tempo of the race was relatively slow at this stage, he felt that he should make every endeavour to ride to his instructions and for this reason he continued to restrain DORDENMA despite the fact that it was proving difficult to settle. Apprentice Yeung was severely reprimanded and advised that although the Stewards were mindful he is a 10 lb claiming apprentice jockey, his riding in the early and middle stages on DORDENMA on this occasion lacked initiative and judgement and that he should have allowed DORDENMA to hold its position inside of NOBLE MAN. When the pace slackened appreciably near the 1100 Metres, a number of runners were badly hampered, most notably BLUE SKY, REAL SPECIAL, FLUKE, CONGRATS and WATCH WHAT HAPPENS. After this, REAL SPECIAL, BLUE SKY and WATCH WHAT HAPPENS continued to prove particularly difficult to settle and were checked away from heels on a number of occasions. Near the 850 Metres, after improving inside the heels of FLUKE, REAL SPECIAL, which was continuing to be difficult to settle, was checked and blundered when crowded for room between FLUKE and BLUE SKY which shifted out when being checked away from the heels of INTERCHINA STAR. BROM BROM, which was following, was hampered in consequence. Passing the 500 Metres, FLUKE was unable to maintain its position when crowded for room between WHATABOB and BROM BROM, both of which shifted slightly. Rounding the Home Turn, INTERCHINA STAR raced tight between WHATABOB and DORDENMA. Also rounding the Home Turn, BLUE SKY was crowded for room between FLUKE which shifted in slightly and WATCH WHAT HAPPENS. When questioned regarding his riding of FLUKE, H W Lai stated that at the entrance to the Straight, FLUKE was positioned inside the heels of BROM BROM and that at this point clear running was available to him inside that horse. He said however approaching and passing the 200 Metres, FLUKE improved to be racing towards the heels of CONGRATS and he was unable to obtain clear running, therefore he steadied his mount so that FLUKE could shift to the outside of BROM BROM into clear running. A veterinary inspection of FLUKE and REAL SPECIAL after the race did not show any significant findings. GREAT ACHIEVEMENT and INTERCHINA STAR were sent for sampling. <24/9/2009 Additional Veterinary Report> FLUKE was examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison. He said at that time there were no significant findings. FLUKE was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer L Ho this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its right hind leg with abrasions to hock and upper tendon. Before being allowed to race again, FLUKE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
