Racing Incident Report
KING POWER was withdrawn on 29.11.08 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared starter VIKING TOR (D Beadman). Before being allowed to race again, KING POWER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SHANGDONG GENERAL was slow to begin, then lost further ground when crowded for room between MERIDIAN PRIDE and SUPER FIGHTER. Near the 1200 Metres, BERIO, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of COUNTRY MAGIC which got its head on the side and shifted in away from VIKING TOR which at this time was shifting in whilst being ridden along with the whip. After the 600 Metres, CHIRAC was steadied after becoming unbalanced when awkwardly placed between SICHUAN HERO and BERIO. On straightening, SICHUAN HERO was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of SHANGDONG GENERAL. Throughout the race, FRIENDSHIP travelled wide and without cover. The performance of SHANGDONG GENERAL, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SHANGDONG GENERAL will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. G Mossé (MERIDIAN PRIDE), 4th placegetter, was found guilty of a charge of failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for G Mossé’s licence to race in races be suspended for a period to expire on Monday 5 January 2009 on which day he may resume race riding (5 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday 14 December 2008. B Prebble (BERIO) explained he had been instructed to have the horse switched off in the early stages in an attempt to ensure it closed the race off. He said recently when being ridden in a forward position BERIO had not settled as he would have hoped and as a consequence not shown a kick when placed under pressure in the Straight. He said today on jumping he took BERIO back from its barrier, the horse over-raced in the early stages and near the 1200 Metres when proving difficult to settle was steadied away from the heels of COUNTRY MAGIC. He said BERIO travelled reasonably in the run, on straightening when shifted into the clear responded strongly to his riding and he felt his mount would win the race. He said over the final 200 Metres BERIO did not finish the race off as expected, but did continue to fight on. Trainer D J Hall confirmed the riding instructions issued to B Prebble. D Beadman (VIKING TOR) explained he had been told the horse did not show its usual speed at its most recent race start. He said he was instructed to ride the horse in a prominent position from a wide gate and if possible with cover behind the lead. He said he had never previously ridden VIKING TOR in track work or in a race and during the preliminary he noted the horse to be a little restricted in its action. He said however he was not unduly concerned about this. He said from its wide barrier VIKING TOR began fairly, however, despite being ridden along vigorously hands and heels did not show natural speed and in his opinion appeared somewhat reluctant to stride out. He said because of this after the 1300 Metres he commenced to ride VIKING TOR along with the whip to have the horse take up the bridle and travel into a forward position. He said at the 1200 Metres it became apparent to him that he would not be able to obtain a position with cover behind the lead and therefore to avoid travelling in a four wide position he continued to ride VIKING TOR along to cross to the fence in the lead making the turn at the 800 Metres. He said while he was aware that he had made considerable use of VIKING TOR in the early stages of the race, he felt this was a better option in the interest of the horse rather than travelling four wide outside the lead without cover. He said after crossing to the fence he then steadied the tempo on VIKING TOR and the horse travelled fairly. He said in the Straight VIKING TOR kept on well considering the use which had been made of it in the early stages. He did say the manner in which VIKING TOR travelled indicated to him clearly it was better suited on a more forgiving track than that of today. Mr D J Hall, trainer of VIKING TOR, confirmed the riding instructions issued to D Beadman. He said he initially was surprised to see the horse being made use of to race in the lead. He said immediately following the race D Beadman explained to him the horse appeared reluctant to show early speed, the same as at its most recent start. He said D Beadman also explained to him because of this he rode the horse vigorously in the early stages in an endeavour to have it travel in a forward position. Mr Hall said after reviewing the official videos of the race he accepted the reasons for D Beadman riding VIKING TOR in the manner in which he did. He did say VIKING TOR is a horse with a history of joint problems which required constant attention. He said because of these problems VIKING TOR does not on occasions stride out fully in its action. Mr Hall and D Beadman were told their explanations would be reported and should at any time the Stewards wish to revisit the riding of VIKING TOR, they will do so. MORE BOUNTIFUL and LAMBRO were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary reported BERIO had lost its left front plate and CHIRAC had lost its right front plate.
