Racing Incident Report
On straightening, GRAND STORE was steadied when having difficulty obtaining clear running. Apprentice K T Yeung (SKYVIEW BAR) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position if possible. He said in the early stages SKYVIEW BAR did not show speed and shortly after the start was momentarily crowded for room inside ADAIKALI. He said after this SKYVIEW BAR hung in noticeably which prevented him from riding his mount along and as a consequence SKYVIEW BAR travelled further back than intended. He said he then rode SKYVIEW BAR along in an endeavour to make up ground, however, the horse did not respond to his riding. When questioned, S K Sit (SUPERIOR UNIT) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position as is usual. He said SUPERIOR UNIT on jumping got its head up, he then ensured the horse was properly balanced before commencing to ride it along to make up ground after the 1000 Metres. He said in the middle stages SUPERIOR UNIT hung out badly as it has done in the past, then in the Home Straight hung in and proved difficult to ride out. In the circumstances, the Stewards believed the performance of SUPERIOR UNIT to be unsatisfactory and the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend before being allowed to race again. S K Sit was told he must ensure at all stages of the race he rides his mounts competitively. K M Chin (GIGA SPIRITS) said it had been explained to him prior to the race that the horse has an awkward action. He said GIGA SPIRITS began well, he immediately rode it along, however, the horse did not stretch out and muster speed and as a consequence got well back. He said in his opinion GIGA SPIRITS felt sound, however, did not handle the surface at its first race start on the All Weather Track. The performance of GIGA SPIRITS, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GIGA SPIRITS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, Mr T K Ng, trainer of ROYAL PERICLES, said two starts ago from an outside barrier on the turf ROYAL PERICLES was ridden quietly as instructed and closed the race off strongly. He said at its most recent start over the same course and distance as today's race, ROYAL PERICLES had again performed well without being pressured to go forward in the early stages and that he was satisfied with the riding of E Saint-Martin given the horse had previously shown it had been able to close its races off. He said today ROYAL PERICLES had a lighter weight and because of this he engaged W M Lai to ride the horse. He said as W M Lai had previously been successful on ROYAL PERICLES over the same course and distance when leading, he today instructed W M Lai to obtain a forward position on the horse, however, if the pace was too strong, he should follow the leaders. Mr Ng was told the consistency of horses trained by him was of concern to the Stewards and he should ensure where possible horses perform and are ridden in such a manner to perform consistently. PICKETT and GIGA SPIRITS were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of PICKETT and GIGA SPIRITS after the race did not show any significant findings. GRAND STORE, ROYAL PERICLES and MASTER POWER were sent for sampling.
