Racing Incident Report
A BETTER DRAGON was slow to begin. HONG KONG GEM began awkwardly. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, OH GREAT was steadied when awkwardly placed between SPARKLE and SINOSPIEL. Near the 1300 Metres, SINOSPIEL and WONG'S FAVOURITE were steadied when crowded for room while awkward inside the heels of NOBLE ZOOM which shifted in when barely clear. Passing the 1000 Metres, WONG'S FAVOURITE was carried wider by SINOSPIEL which when proving difficult to settle shifted to the outside of the heels of SHANGHAI DELIGHT. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, WONG'S FAVOURITE was bumped by DANRIVA which shifted in. Making the Home Turn, A BETTER DRAGON was steadied when close to the heels of SHANGHAI DELIGHT. On straightening, SHANGHAI DELIGHT and SINOSPIEL raced tight when endeavouring to improve between DANRIVA and WONG'S FAVOURITE. At the 250 Metres, when endeavouring to shift out to obtain clear running, A BETTER DRAGON raced tight inside BRAVERY LUCK which was hanging in. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident occurred over the concluding stages which cast doubt on whether CHINA SPORTFIELD ought be declared the winner of the race. S K Sit (SPARKLE), 2nd placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against CHINA SPORTFIELD (D Nikolic) being declared the winner alleging interference over the final 100 Metres. Having considered the evidence and having looked at the official videos, the Stewards formed the view that inside the final 50 Metres CHINA SPORTFIELD shifted out, made contact with SPARKLE over the concluding stages and carried that horse wider on the track away from the running to which it was entitled. Having in mind the short head margin between the two horses at the end of the race and the manner in which SPARKLE was finishing the race off, the Stewards believed had the interference to that horse from CHINA SPORTFIELD not occurred, SPARKLE would have finished in front of CHINA SPORTFIELD. Therefore the protest/objection was sustained. Accordingly the amended placings between No. 11 SPARKLE 1st; No. 4 CHINA SPORTFIELD, 2nd; No. 12 A BETTER DRAGON 3rd; and No. 9 BRAVERY LUCK 4th. Subsequently D Nikolic was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount. W M Lai (DANRIVA) reported making the turn at the 1000 Metres the horse commenced to hang out and as a consequence of this, the bit pulled through in the horse's mouth, as such he was not able to properly control DANRIVA after this. Apprentice K T Yeung (LA MERVEILLE) explained he had been instructed to take the horse back in the early stages from its wide barrier and to ensure he found a position on the rail. He said it was felt due to the make-up of the field that if LA MERVEILLE were ridden forward from its awkward barrier, the horse would travel in a 3 or 4 wide position throughout and most probably without cover. O Doleuze was unable to offer an explanation for the poor performance of HONG KONG GEM. He said the horse travelled well back as is usual, was inclined to lay in in the middle stages and in the Straight hung in. B Prebble (OH GREAT) explained making the turn at the 1200 Metres his horse felt disunited in its action and he thought there might be something seriously amiss with the horse. He said because of this he eased OH GREAT out of the race. He said after being eased down, OH GREAT trotted back to the scale and felt normal in its action. Before being permitted to race again, OH GREAT will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SINOSPIEL, HONG KONG GEM, OH GREAT and DANRIVA were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SINOSPIEL, HONG KONG GEM, OH GREAT and DANRIVA after the race did not show any significant findings. SPARKLE and CHINA SPORTFIELD were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 28 June 2007)
HONG KONG GEM, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. HONG KONG GEM was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer D Cruz this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, HONG KONG GEM will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
