Racing Incident Report

After arriving in the Parade Ring, WINNING CHAMP had its left front plate reset. WINNING CHAMP was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. As the start was effected, LIGHTNING MOUNT became fractious, put its head down and as a consequence was slow to begin. KING OF SPADES was slow to begin. After the 1200 Metres, PAY-DAY was momentarily steadied away from the heels of LUCKY YEARS, then approaching the 1000 Metres got its head up and lost ground when again being steadied away from the heels of LUCKY YEARS which shifted in momentarily. At the 900 Metres, ACCELERATION was left racing wide and without cover. After the 800 Metres, BALL OF FIRE was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of ACCELERATION. Apprentice K L Chui (LIGHTNING MOUNT) explained after losing ground at the start he rode his mount along in an endeavour to make up ground. He said LIGHTNING MOUNT responded only fairly to his riding in the early stages and made gradual ground. He said in the Straight because of the fast tempo of the race, LIGHTNING MOUNT did make ground and in his opinion closed the race off nicely. LIGHTNING MOUNT was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, LIGHTNING MOUNT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. F Coetzee (BALL OF FIRE) explained the horse raced in a rearward position as is usual. He said he was concerned passing the 800 Metres that the leaders were getting away from him and therefore he attempted to shift to the outside of ACCELERATION to improve around that horse as he felt it would not carry him forward. He said when he did this BALL OF FIRE was not travelling well enough to improve its position, so he shifted back to a trailing position behind ACCELERATION. He said when ACCELERATION did not improve its position after the 500 Metres, because of the manner in which BALL OF FIRE was travelling, he was not able to improve his position. He did say in the Straight BALL OF FIRE finished the race off fairly, however, in his opinion due to the horse's racing style and the manner in which the race was run, it was not suited today. BALL OF FIRE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BALL OF FIRE after the race did not show any significant findings. KING OF SPADES and WITHALLMYHEART were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported WINNING CHAMP had lost its left front plate.
