Racing Incident Report
When weighing out to ride DOLPHIN STAR in this race, K S Yu was 2 lbs overweight which had not been declared. K S Yu was fined $2,000. After mounting RENA'S WUNDERBAR in the pre-race parade, G Mossé said he felt unwell. G Mossé dismounted RENA'S WUNDERBAR and after a short time said he was in his opinion fit to fulfil his riding engagement. G Mossé was examined by the Club's doctors who said in their opinion he was suitable to ride in this race. As a result, RENA'S WUNDERBAR was late leaving the Parade Ring. On jumping, SPEED OF LIGHT lost ground when crowded for room between ZABEEL VICTORY and LORD CAIRNS, both of which shifted ground. As a consequence, SPEED OF LIGHT travelled well back. In the early stages, SHOW BRAVELY hung in, then for the major part of the race travelled wide and without cover. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, HURRICANE WAY, which was proving difficult to settle, was awkwardly placed outside the heels of MAIN ATTRACTION. Near the 600 Metres, TOUCH DOWN was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of HURRICANE WAY. From on straightening until the 200 Metres, TOUCH DOWN was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Near the 300 Metres, ZABEEL VICTORY, which was giving ground, was checked when crowded for room inside RISING WIN (W M Lai) which when commencing to close the race off strongly, shifted in to avoid the heels of KNIGHT TEMPLAR which had commenced to give ground quickly. It was considered appropriate that W M Lai be severely reprimanded and told whilst there were contributing factors to this incident, he nonetheless should ensure he does his utmost to protect his fellow riders. At the 200 Metres, TOUCH DOWN was steadied away from the heels of DOLPHIN STAR which at this time shifted out slightly. After this, TOUCH DOWN was shifted to the outside of HURRICANE WAY into clear running, then close to the line raced tight inside SHOW BRAVELY which got its head on the side and shifted in. When questioned regarding the poor performance of SPEED OF LIGHT, O Doleuze said after being crowded at the start he took his mount back from a wide gate. He said in the Straight when placed under pressure SPEED OF LIGHT shifted ground and failed to lengthen its stride. He was unable to offer any explanation for the performance. SPEED OF LIGHT and KNIGHT TEMPLAR were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SPEED OF LIGHT and KNIGHT TEMPLAR after the race did not show any significant findings. MAIN ATTRACTION and RISING WIN were sent for sampling.
