Racing Incident Report
BEETHOVEN was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore). Before being allowed to race again, BEETHOVEN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FRUITY FRUITY was slow to begin. In the early stages, FRUITY FRUITY proved difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. In the middle stages, FIRM OFFER proved difficult to settle. Near the 350 Metres, GOOD PROFIT was steadied when disappointed for running between CHEEKY and SOUNDS BEST. GOOD PROFIT was then shifted to the inside of CHEEKY to obtain clear running. Passing the 200 Metres, CHEEKY shifted in under pressure, inconveniencing GOOD PROFIT. Near the 100 Metres, NOBLE CRUSADER which when weakening was inclined to lay out and was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed inside FIRM OFFER which shifted in slightly. Just prior to the winning post, MAVERICK STAR was steadied away from the heels of SAN LORENZO which shifted out. When questioned, B Prebble (GOLD STRIKER) said after the 1300 Metres he looked to his outside when he was aware NOBLE CRUSADER was going forward and shifting in. He said at that time he spoke to Apprentice H W Lai, the rider of NOBLE CRUSADER, to indicate it was his intention to continue racing away from the rail. Apprentice Lai confirmed he heard B Prebble calling to him, however, he did not respond. B Prebble and Apprentice Lai were told to ensure they do not communicate with other riders during a race except in matters relating to safety. Y T Cheng (MAVERICK STAR), which was dropping back in distance today from 2000 Metres, explained he had been instructed to allow the horse to travel where it was comfortable in the early stages. He said over longer distances MAVERICK STAR can prove difficult to settle and travels in a more prominent position. He said today MAVERICK STAR began well, he allowed the horse to travel at its own pace and as a consequence in the early stages it dropped to a rearward position. He said when the tempo of the race steadied after the 1000 Metres, MAVERICK STAR which at that stage was racing without cover commenced to over-race and as such he allowed it to stride into a forward position. F Coetzee (ABLE ONE) said he had been instructed to switch the horse off in the early stages as it possesses a strong finishing run and that he was to bring it to the outside in the Home Straight. He said because of this he did not allow ABLE ONE to jump quickly from the outside barrier, he immediately shifted across behind runners and travelled at the rear. He said to ensure he was able to obtain clear running in the Home Straight, he remained racing one horse away from the rail. He said because of the slow tempo in the early stages ABLE ONE raced keenly and as a consequence when the field quickened after the 450 Metres ABLE ONE was left flat-footed, then in the Straight hung in. GOLD STRIKER and FIRM OFFER were sent for sampling.
