Racing Incident Report
SUPER HONEY was slow to muster speed and then throughout the race travelled wide and without cover. At the 350 Metres, REGAL THRILLS was steadied and shifted to the outside of SUPER HONEY to go forward. After the 200 Metres, SPARKLING STAR was crowded for room inside COURAGEOUSHEART which shifted in after being steadied and shifted away from the heels of CHOICE AND CHANCE which was giving ground. Approaching the 100 Metres, SUPER HONEY was bumped by LIFELINE RAPIDE which got its head on the side and shifted out away from SUPER PRINCE. F Coetzee, the rider of LIFELINE RAPIDE, stopped riding and straightened his mount. LIFELINE RAPIDE then continued to hang out in the run to the line. In the Straight, GRAND CRU hung out. When questioned, W M Lai (CHOICE AND CHANCE) said he had been instructed to try and have the horse begin well as in recent starts it had been travelling well back after being slow to begin. He said CHOICE AND CHANCE was again today slow to begin, he then rode along to ensure the horse obtained a good position. He said when he did this CHOICE AND CHANCE commenced to pull and travelled forward into the lead. He said CHOICE AND CHANCE was running a faster tempo than he wished, however, the horse would not relax. He said after the 800 Metres CHOICE AND CHANCE opened up a considerable lead on the remainder of the field, however, he felt if he were to attempt to more vigorously steady the horse it would get its head up and over-race more than it was already doing. Mr T W Leung, trainer of CHOICE AND CHANCE, confirmed the instructions issued to W M Lai and said the horse is well-known as being difficult to ride. He said in the circumstances he was satisfied with the riding of W M Lai. W M Lai and Mr Leung were told their explanations would be reported. LIFELINE RAPIDE, SUPER HONEY and CHOICE AND CHANCE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LIFELINE RAPIDE, SUPER HONEY and CHOICE AND CHANCE after the race did not show any significant findings. SUPER SNIPPETS and GRAND CRU were sent for sampling.
