Racing Incident Report
DONGGUAN VICTORY was slow to begin. At the 1400 Metres, BALL OF FIRE was steadied when awkwardly placed outside JOYFUL YEARS. At the 1300 Metres, JOYFUL YEARS was checked severely when crowded for room between BALL OF FIRE which was carried in slightly by MIRACLE DRAGON and FIGS which after being crossed by SILVER JET was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of that horse. Although the check to JOYFUL YEARS was one of significance, the Stewards believed it was not appropriate to take any action. Near the 700 Metres, MADE IN HONGKONG was steadied when disappointed for running between FUN CRUISER and ESPRIT D'OR. For the major part of the race, MIRACLE DRAGON travelled wide and without cover. The performances of A-TACK, GREAT FORTUNE and MIRACLE DRAGON, which finished tailed out, were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, A-TACK, GREAT FORTUNE and MIRACLE DRAGON will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. B Prebble (GREAT FORTUNE) said the horse was able to obtain a forward position tonight after beginning well. He said previously GREAT FORTUNE has always been slow to begin and consequently travelled much further back. When questioned, H K Yim (BALL OF FIRE) said he had been instructed to allow the horse to travel where it was comfortable which was anticipated to be in a rearward position as usual. He said tonight BALL OF FIRE began better than it usually does and he did not ride his mount along in the early stages. He said BALL OF FIRE travelled more keenly than it usually does and because of this continued to race wide on the track without cover inside MIRACLE DRAGON He said after entering the Back Straight BALL OF FIRE would not relax and travelled forward to take the lead. He said BALL OF FIRE continued on in the lead while over-racing. He said he was aware BALL OF FIRE had opened a significant gap on the remainder of the field, but as he was aware the horse had previously had a wind operation, he did not overly restrain his mount as he believed this would be detrimental to its chances. He said BALL OF FIRE only commenced to give ground over the final 200 Metres. Mr A Schutz, trainer of BALL OF FIRE, confirmed the riding instructions issued and said he believed BALL OF FIRE would race behind midfield as is usual. He said BALL OF FIRE has proved itself at track work to be a difficult ride by taking charge of experienced riders. He said he accepted the manner in which BALL OF FIRE raced tonight was attributable to the horse and therefore he was not critical of H K Yim. BALL OF FIRE was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. MIRACLE DRAGON and ESPRIT D'OR were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BALL OF FIRE, MIRACLE DRAGON and ESPRIT D'OR after the race did not show any significant findings. MIRACULOUS, MADE IN HONGKONG and FUN CRUISER were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted DONGGUAN VICTORY had blood present at its left nostril. An endoscopic examination showed the horse's trachea to be clean and therefore it was deemed not to have bled.
