Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the saddling stalls, WADADELIGHT had its left front plate reset. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. On jumping, TRIUMPHANT UNICORN was crowded for room between CLASSA FOR EVER and WIN AGAIN. Making the turn near the 800 Metres, WIN AGAIN was checked to avoid the heels of DOWN TOWN (Apprentice C W Wong) which shifted in when not clear. TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, which was following WIN AGAIN, was inconvenienced. Apprentice Wong was severely reprimanded and told he would be expected to exercise greater care. At the 800 Metres, FIFTY FIFTY became unbalanced when being steadied away from the heels of KINDACROSS which shifted in when barely clear. The Stewards considered a protest/objection lodged by Y T Cheng, the rider of TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, which finished 4th against EGYPTIAN RA (B Prebble) being declared the 3rd placegetter. Y T Cheng had alleged interference to his mount near the 350 Metres. Having viewed the videos and heard the submissions from the riders, the Stewards formed the opinion that near the 350 Metres TRIUMPHANT UNICORN was attempting to improve into a run between FIFTY FIFTY and EGYPTIAN RA where full running was not available. At this time, EGYPTIAN RA shifted in slightly, resulting in TRIUMPHANT UNICORN being disappointed for the run. As the Stewards were not satisfied TRIUMPHANT UNICORN had established rightful running, the protest/objection was overruled and weighed-in was declared on the numbers as semaphored by the Judge. For some distance after this, TRIUMPHANT UNICORN continued to be held up and unable to improve between FIFTY FIFTY and EGYPTIAN RA. For a considerable distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, WIN AGAIN was held up when unable to obtain clear running between KINDACROSS and FIFTY FIFTY. Apprentice H W Lai (CLASSA FOR EVER) said the horse over-raced and proved difficult for him to settle in the middle stages and because of this went at too quick a tempo in the lead. He said today was CLASSA FOR EVER's second race start in a visor and in his opinion over 1200 Metres the horse is not suited by this equipment. When questioned, H K Yim (FLYING SPRINTER) said the horse at its most recent start last season had performed poorly when ridden forward from a wide barrier. He said therefore today prior to the race he had discussed with Mr T W Leung, trainer of the horse, that it might be better suited ridden in a position with cover. He said after beginning well, he immediately restrained FLYING SPRINTER, so the horse did not show its natural early pace, however, from a wide draw it soon became apparent to him that he would not be able to obtain a position with cover other than near the rear. He said because of this he continued to steady FLYING SPRINTER until after the 1000 Metres when he was able to shift in behind runners. He did say when being ridden in this manner FLYING SPRINTER failed to finish the race off and was again disappointing. Mr Leung confirmed the intention was to have FLYING SPRINTER ridden with cover if possible today. After viewing the video, Mr Leung said he believed the circumstances of the race required Jockey Yim to take FLYING SPRINTER further back than intended to carry out the instructions and in the circumstances he was satisfied. Both Jockey Yim and Mr Leung said in light of today's performance, FLYING SPRINTER would be ridden more prominently, however, if possible with cover in its future starts. H K Yim was told his riding of FLYING SPRINTER was of concern to the Stewards and he is to ensure he rides his mounts in a manner which is not open to query. Mr Leung was told he has a responsibility to ensure horses trained by him are ridden in a consistent manner where circumstances permit. FIFTY FIFTY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. CLASSA FOR EVER, FLYING SPRINTER and PICKETT were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FIFTY FIFTY, CLASSA FOR EVER, FLYING SPRINTER and PICKETT after the race did not show any significant findings. DOWN TOWN and WIN AGAIN were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 11 September 2006)
