Racing Incident Report
SURE FORTUNE was slow to begin. On jumping, SUPER SPECIAL was crowded for room between LUCKY TRIO and UNIVERSAL KOMISSAR which shifted out. SUPER began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, SUPER LUCK was bumped by SPARKLE which shifted in after being bumped by CROISSANT which shifted in. Near the 900 Metres, UNIVERSAL KOMISSAR was steadied away from the heels of SUPER SPECIAL which itself was steadied away from the heels of LUCKY TRIO which shifted in. No action was taken. In the middle stages and particularly making the Home Turn, LUCKY TRIO hung out. Because of this, CROISSANT was carried wider. At the 300 Metres, SUPER SPECIAL was shifted in when disappointed for running between ARIGATO and LUCKY TRIO which was giving ground. At the 200 Metres, SUPER SPECIAL was then shifted out to continue going forward. Also at the 200 Metres, SURE FORTUNE was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between UNIVERSAL KOMISSAR and LUCKY TRIO. The Stewards overruled a protest/objection lodged by A Delpech, the rider of ARIGATO, which finished second, against CROISSANT (C Munce) being declared the winner. A Delpech had alleged interference to his mount inside the final 200 Metres. Whilst the Stewards considered that near the 200 Metres CROISSANT drifted in and when being ridden out the whip of C Munce at the 200 Metres came into contact with the nose of ARIGATO and that whilst racing tightly over the concluding stages, ARIGATO was inclined to lay away from the running rail and on several occasions shied from the whip of C Munce, they did not consider, bearing in mind the half length margin between the two horses at the finish, that ARIGATO would have finished in front of CROISSANT had the interference which did take place not occurred. Accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. When questioned regarding the improved performance of CROISSANT today, Mr J Size, trainer of the horse, said in his opinion CROISSANT appreciated the rain affected ground. He said during track work CROISSANT had shown a liking for rain affected ground. Mr Size said at the horse's last start he was disappointed when it failed to finish the race off, however, he was not able to offer any explanation for that performance. He did say CROISSANT had at all times been sound and following its last start had not missed any track work. UNIVERSAL KOMISSAR, CROISSANT and ARIGATO were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported SUPER LUCK had lost its right front plate.
