Racing Incident Report
BOOMING CITY was slow to begin, then shifted in and was checked away from the heels of DISGUISE. GOOD PARTNER began awkwardly, causing O Doleuze, its rider, to make heavy contact with the inside gate of its stall. On jumping, VICTORY STYLE and ENCHANTED bumped. Due to the pace in the early stages, WINNING SUNSHINE proved very difficult to settle. At the 1300 Metres, EYE WITNESS was steadied away from the heels of FREEBIRD which shifted ground while hanging when not properly clear. After the 1200 Metres, MEMBERS GLORY, which had been racing wide and without cover, was allowed to travel forward. For the major part of the race, VICTORY STYLE travelled wide and without cover and approaching the 800 Metres was allowed to stride forward. At the 800 Metres, WINNING SUNSHINE was steadied when awkwardly placed between CYPRESS HILL and VICTORY STYLE which shifted in slightly. Making the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, EYE WITNESS hung out, then over the concluding stages hung in. Near the 300 Metres, MEMBERS GLORY, which was giving ground, was checked to avoid the heels of GOOD PARTNER which when improving towards the outside of EYE WITNESS (F Coetzee) was carried wider by that horse which was hanging. F Coetzee was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to prevent his mount from shifting ground. When questioned, Y T Cheng, the rider of ENCHANTED, said he had been instructed to ride the horse with a "sit" as the horse in the past had shown a tendency to race keenly. He said ENCHANTED began well and he immediately took hold of his mount in an endeavour to shift across behind runners. He said initially he shifted to a position following WINNING SUNSHINE, however, he elected to come back further and shift closer to the rail to avoid travelling four wide. He said as a consequence ENCHANTED travelled at the rear. He said when ridden in this manner ENCHANTED today was able to close the race off strongly. Mr C W Chang, trainer of ENCHANTED, confirmed the instructions issued to Y T Cheng and said he had been of the opinion the horse would travel in about midfield. He said ENCHANTED was today having its second start for his stable and after its first start for him Jockey C Brown who rode the horse on that occasion suggested it would be suited ridden more quietly. Mr Chang said the stable felt ENCHANTED had a very strong chance in today's race and had supported the horse accordingly. He did say after viewing the videos in his opinion Y T Cheng had taken the horse further back than was required, particularly given the slow tempo of the race in the early stages. Y T Cheng was told his ride in the early stages of the race had lacked initiative and in the opinion of the Stewards given the tempo of the race in the early stages he had overdone his riding instructions to have the horse settled. Mr Chang was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to advise the Stewards of significant intended changes in riding instructions. GOOD PARTNER, VICTORY STYLE and FREEBIRD were sent for sampling.
