Racing Incident Report
When being loaded, ALIPES, which had been fractious, reared, fell over backward and hit its head on the ground. When ALIPES fell, it landed on Apprentice K W Tsui, its rider. ALIPES was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race and also Apprentice Tsui was not able to fulfil his riding engagement due to an injury to his right leg. The Stewards ordered the withdrawal of ALIPES. Before being allowed to race again, ALIPES will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. DOUCAI was slow to muster speed. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, UNIVERSAL PIONEER failed to muster speed, got its head on the side and hung in away from STRAWBERRY KISSES. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, SIR OCTAVIUS was crowded for room inside UNIVERSAL PIONEER which got its head on the side and hung in away from JADE DANCER. After the 200 Metres, KAISER'S PRIZE, which was beginning to close the race off strongly, was momentarily crowded for room inside SIR OCTAVIUS. Apprentice K T Yeung (STRAWBERRY KISSES) was told to refrain from making celebratory gestures well before the winning post. When questioned regarding the poor performance of SURE JOY, B Prebble said when he had ridden the horse in its final gallop, in his opinion the horse's work was only fair and he reported this to the horse's trainer, Mr C H Yip. He said tonight in the Parade Ring SURE JOY felt somewhat stiff in its action and after arriving at the Start was subjected to a veterinary examination which passed the horse as suitable to race. He said the Veterinary Surgeon consulted him regarding the horse at this time and he felt the horse was suitable to ride. He said he rode SURE JOY along in the early stages, the horse did not feel comfortable when under racing pressure and failed to close the race off. Mr Yip confirmed B Prebble had reported to him that the horse's final gallop was only fair. He said this was not unusual for SURE JOY as the horse usually appears somewhat stiff in its action. Mr Yip said SURE JOY was subjected to a pre-race veterinary examination on the day prior to the race which passed the horse as suitable to race. He was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of SURE JOY other than the horse might be better suited when ridden with cover. SURE JOY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of SURE JOY after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of SURE JOY was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SURE JOY will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. STRAWBERRY KISSES and KAISER'S PRIZE were sent for sampling.
