Racing Incident Report
On jumping, HELENE PILLAGING stumbled. Approaching the 200 Metres, BOWMAN'S CROSSING was held up and unable to improve between SAMBUCA and DAVE'S BEST. At the 200 Metres, BOWMAN'S CROSSING was shifted out to obtain clear running. In the run to the winning post, SAMBUCA, which was giving ground, was awkwardly placed between HELENE PILLAGING and DAVE'S BEST and because of this was not ridden out as it normally would be. S Dye (JOYFUL WINNER) said he had been instructed from the inside barrier to ride the horse in what was anticipated to be a slowly run race behind the leader on the fence. He said he obtained this position without making any use of JOYFUL WINNER and the horse travelled comfortably in the run behind HELENE PILLAGING. He said he had noted in most of its races HELENE PILLAGING when under pressure in the Straight hung out and shifted away from the rail. He said entering the Home Straight he remained behind HELENE PILLAGING and inside the hindquarters of SAMBUCA as to have endeavoured to shift to the outside of that horse would have meant for him to come back and lose ground in a race that had developed into a sprint home. He said from on straightening until the 100 Metres he remained racing behind HELENE PILLAGING and inside the hindquarters of SAMBUCA and was unable to improve his position. He did say he was able to ride JOYFUL WINNER along with the whip to maintain its position, however, clear running did not present itself until the 100 Metres when HELENE PILLAGING at this time got its head on the side and hung out. The Stewards accepted the explanation of S Dye. R Fradd was severely reprimanded for the manner in which he conducted himself in the Weighing Room following the running of this race. JOYFUL WINNER, ART TRADER and DAVE'S BEST were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported DAVE'S BEST had lost the left front plate and RIVER DANCER had sustained an abrasion to the right hock.
