Racing Incident Report

RICH DRAGON and SANBENITO were slow to begin. SOLAR began awkwardly, shifted in and got its head up. In the early stages, SIR ERNESTO proved difficult to settle and got its head up when racing close to the heels of KING OF FISH. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, LIBERAL'S KNIGHT got its head on the side, commenced to hang in and caused crowding on its inside to KINGSTON WINNER. At the 800 Metres, KINGSTON WINNER was steadied to avoid the heels of LIBERAL'S KNIGHT which when continuing to hang in shifted ground. In the middle stages, WINNING SUCCESS hung out. At the 700 Metres, SOLAR, which was racing close to the heels of WINNING SUCCESS, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of SIR ERNESTO. After the 200 Metres, LIBERAL'S KNIGHT when placed under pressure hung in. Because of this, R Fradd, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. Over about the last 75 Metres, SOLAR was unable to obtain clear running behind KING OF FISH and LIBERAL'S KNIGHT. Because of this, SOLAR was not ridden out to the line. Over the final 50 Metres, SANBENITO was held up and unable to improve behind SELF FLIT which commenced to give ground. Because of this, SANBENITO was not ridden out to the end of the race. Prior to the winning post, LIBERAL'S KNIGHT was bumped by KING OF FISH which shifted out. In the Straight, RICH DRAGON, which was closing the race off strongly, hung in. Throughout the race, LOYAL KNIGHT travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the improved performance of GOLDEN SUN, Apprentice C W Wong who had also ridden the horse at its previous start said the riding instructions on both occasions were to have the horse racing with cover in an endeavour to have it finish its race off. He said last start from a wider barrier GOLDEN SUN travelled without cover in the early stages and then failed to finish the race off. He said today he was able to obtain a nice position in midfield where GOLDEN SUN relaxed for him and consequently finished the race off. Mr C H Yip, trainer of GOLDEN SUN, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Apprentice Wong on each occasion and was unable to offer any other explanation for the improved performance of GOLDEN SUN. He did say the win of GOLDEN SUN had surprised him as he believed the horse only to have an outside place chance. GOLDEN SUN and SIR ERNESTO were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported WONG'S SUCCESS had bled from both nostrils and LIBERAL'S KNIGHT had sustained an abrasion to the right hock and had lost its right hind plate.
