Racing Incident Report
MIRACULOUS was withdrawn on 30.1.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (respiratory disease) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SPEED WINNER (Y T Cheng). Before being allowed to race again, MIRACULOUS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. KIWI DASH and KING OF SPADES were slow to begin. PLEASURE PLEASURE began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. MAVERICK began awkwardly and shortly afterwards got its head up. Shortly after the start, KING OF SPADES was steadied when crowded for room between JUSTINIAN and PRO JOY which began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. In the early stages, NEW TAMAR and MILLENNIUM DAWN proved difficult to settle. At the 1200 Metres, KID GALAXY was momentarily steadied away from the heels of SHINING LIGHT. After the 1200 Metres, KING OF SPADES was hampered and carried wider by KIWI DASH which at this time was carried out by MAVERICK. On straightening, MILLENNIUM DAWN was bumped by NEW TAMAR which shifted out. After the 400 Metres, KIWI DASH got its head on the side and was reluctant to shift out into clear running when being steadied away from the heels of MAVERICK. At the 300 Metres, Apprentice H W Lai (MILLENNIUM DAWN) dropped his whip after striking the arm of O Doleuze (KING OF SPADES). For the major part of the race, PLEASURE PLEASURE raced wide and without cover. When questioned, C Soumillon (PRO JOY) said he had spoken with Mr C W Chang, trainer of the horse, yesterday by telephone as Mr Chang was out of town. He said he had been told by Mr Chang to ensure that he rode PRO JOY which was having its first start for a new stable today in a rearward position and he was to ensure that no runners were to his outside and then in the Home Straight take PRO JOY away from other horses to make its run on its own. C Soumillon said he advised Mr Chang that having drawn barrier 2 these instructions might be difficult to carry out, however, he said Mr Chang reaffirmed the instructions issued and said they were in accordance with the manner in which PRO JOY had been ridden during its track work. He said PRO JOY began awkwardly and shifted out, he immediately endeavoured to shift wider on the track. He said running along the Back Straight he had KIWI DASH and KING OF SPADES to his outside which were also ridden in a rearward position and as such he was not able to ensure he had no horse to his outside until near the 1000 Metres when he came back to follow these runners. He said at this time he was aware there was clear running available to him near the rail which would have enabled him to improve his position, however, he said the riding instructions given to him in his mind were binding. He said in the middle stages he raced away from the rail and followed KING OF SPADES and on straightening shifted to the outside of that horse. He said whilst PRO JOY did make some ground in the run home, it did not finish the race off as hoped. Before concluding this matter, the Stewards will speak with Mr Chang when he returns to Hong Kong. RIGHT FRAAR and PLEASURE PLEASURE were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported NEW TAMAR was making an abnormal breathing noise.
