Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, CHOICE AND CHANCE was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the horse was lame in the right front leg and as such was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of CHOICE AND CHANCE. Before being allowed to race again, CHOICE AND CHANCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GREAT IDEA was slow to begin. Near the 800 Metres, ASSET PLAY was crowded for room and SHINING DRAGON became unbalanced when being steadied as a result of being crowded for room inside WIN FORTUNE (Apprentice K H Chan) which when hanging in shifted ground. Apprentice Chan was severely reprimanded and told whilst the Stewards accepted he made some effort to relieve the pressure to the runners on his inside, he nonetheless would be expected to make a greater effort than he did on this occasion to prevent his mount from shifting ground. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, WIKI WIKI was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of ASSET PLAY. After the 200 Metres HAPPY WINNING attempted to savage WIN FORTUNE. As HAPPY WINNING had previously attempted to savage other runners in a race, Mr P O'Sullivan, trainer of the horse, was told HAPPY WINNING would be required to perform to the Stewards' satisfaction in an official barrier trial and further that should HAPPY WINNING again attempt to savage in the future, consideration will be given to recommending that the horse's entry be refused. Passing the 200 Metres, ASSET PLAY had difficulty obtaining clear running between HAPPY WINNING and WIN FORTUNE. Throughout the race, WIN FORTUNE hung in. The performance of CAPTAIN BUNNY, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CAPTAIN BUNNY will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. B Prebble (SOUTH CHINA NINETY) said the horse which had drawn the outside barrier began well and he immediately noticed CAPTAIN BUNNY which was racing to his inside being hard ridden in an attempt to go forward. He said to have gone forward and endeavoured to clear CAPTAIN BUNNY would have required him in his opinion to make too much use of SOUTH CHINA NINETY given the race was being run at such a quick tempo, he therefore elected to remain racing on the outside of CAPTAIN BUNNY in the hope that horse would be able to obtain a position somewhere behind midfield and closer to the rail. He said however CAPTAIN BUNNY despite being vigorously ridden did not muster speed and remained racing well away from the rail until after the 700 Metres. He said because of this SOUTH CHINA NINETY raced further back than anticipated. M W Leung (CROISSANT) explained from the inside gate today he was instructed if the horse began well, he should endeavour to lead; if not, to take a sit behind the leaders. Mr J Size, trainer of CROISSANT, confirmed the riding instructions issued to M W Leung and also those issued to C Munce who ride the gelding at its last start. On that occasion C Munce was told from a wide barrier to ride the horse with cover in an attempt to have it finish the race off. Mr Size explained previously CROISSANT had performed disappointedly and when drawn an inside barrier on the All Weather Track had been reluctant to race inside other runners. He said therefore last start from a wide barrier he thought there was an opportunity to allow CROISSANT to settle and race outside horses in an endeavour to have it close the race off which it failed to do. He said therefore from barrier 1 today he felt it was in the best interest of CROISSANT if possible to lead so as not to have it travel amongst runners. Mr Size was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to advise the Stewards of intentional changes to the manner in which horses trained by him are ridden. GREAT IDEA was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GREAT IDEA after the race did not show any significant findings. SURE JOY and WIKI WIKI were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported FLORAL ARTS had lost its left front plate.
