Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, the tongue tie of SWEET SMILE was refitted. AMICABLE, which was standing with its head turned to the left, began awkwardly and lost ground. LUCKY SUPERSTAR was slow to begin. ON THE TEE began awkwardly and got its head up. M Rodd (SWAGGIE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of AMICABLE, causing that horse to be carried in which in turn caused FLORAL DANCER to be carried in, resulting in crowding on its inside to PERFECT GALLANT which became severely unbalanced, blundered and almost fell. PERFECT GALLANT then shifted out abruptly and caused ON THE TEE to be severely checked. M Rodd was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 16 June 2005 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 8 June 2005. In addition, M Rodd was fined $30,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating two further racedays. From the outside barrier, SPECTACULAR TIMES raced wide and without cover throughout and making the Home Turn hung out. After the 400 Metres, WINNING EMPEROR got its head on the side, hung in and was steadied away from the heels of SWAGGIE. After the 100 Metres, SWEET SMILE got its head on the side, commenced to lay in and on two occasions brushed MILLION SUCCESS. When questioned, Apprentice C K Tong (AMICABLE) explained shortly after straightening he was of the opinion SHINING LIGHT would go forward and improve its position outside the leaders in a three wide position. He said because of this after the 400 Metres he commenced to steady in an attempt to shift towards the outside of SHINING LIGHT despite there at all times being clear running inside that horse which would have enabled him to improve his position. He said when SHINING LIGHT did not go on as he had anticipated, he near the 350 Metres shifted back towards the inside of SHINING LIGHT and commenced to ride his mount out. Apprentice Tong was told his riding at this stage of the race was of great concern to the Stewards, however, having in mind his level of experience it was decided that he ought not be charged. He was severely reprimanded and told he must be aware of opportunities which present themselves particularly at such vital stages of the race. SWAGGIE and PERFECT GALLANT were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SWAGGIE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had bled from both nostrils. A veterinary inspection of PERFECT GALLANT after the race did not show any significant findings. SWEET SMILE and MILLION SUCCESS were sent for sampling. The Veterinary Officer reported following the race SWEET SMILE had blood present at its left nostril. He said an endoscopic examination confirmed the horse to have bled from both nostrils.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 6 June 2005)
PERFECT GALLANT, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. PERFECT GALLANT was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer S T Wong this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to have a laceration to the left front pastern. Before being allowed to race again, PERFECT GALLANT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
