Racing Incident Report
COSMO STAR and WINNING WAYS were slow to begin. POWERFUL began awkwardly and knuckled. PAY-DAY was a little slow to begin, then near the 1300 Metres when shifting in blundered after striking the heels of ON SHAN EXPRESS which shifted out away from GOLD DIGGER. No action was taken. In the middle stages and in the Home Straight, CAPABEL hung out. Shortly after entering the Home Straight, GOLD DIGGER was steadied when briefly crowded for room by HAPPY ALL AROUND which shifted in. Near the 200 Metres, GREAT STAR, which was commencing to close the race off, was checked when crowded for room between CAPABEL (Apprentice C K Tong) which while hanging out and being ridden along shifted out and FORTUNE ALL TIMES (Apprentice K W Tsui) which while being ridden along shifted in. As a result of the shifts from both horses, CAPABEL and FORTUNE ALL TIMES then bumped and became unbalanced. In the circumstances, both Apprentices Tong and Tsui were severely reprimanded and advised in similar circumstances they would be expected to stop riding their mounts and straighten sooner than they did on this occasion. When questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the Straight, A Delpech (L'ENFANT) said he had ridden the horse on a number of occasions previously and he believed it had shown itself to not appreciate taking runs between horses in the Home Straight. He said because of this tonight after travelling on the rail in the early and middle stages behind SUPER MARKSMAN which he considered to have a good chance in the race he on straightening shifted out behind SUPER MARKSMAN as that horse was shifting out to find clear running. He said he was hopeful SUPER MARKSMAN would continue out which would enable L'ENFANT to obtain a run away from the rail. He said after remaining behind SUPER MARKSMAN for about 100 Metres it became apparent that L'ENFANT would not be able to obtain a run wider on the track and he then near the 300 Metres shifted back into clear running which had been available to him on the inside. He said after doing this whilst L'ENFANT made ground in the run to the line it did not fully appreciate racing inside runners. A Delpech was told his explanation would be reported and he must at all times and particularly at crucial stages of the race take opportunities to improve his position as they present themselves. Following the race, O Doleuze, the rider of COSMO STAR, reported he was concerned with the horse's action. COSMO STAR was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, COSMO STAR was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. ON SHAN EXPRESS and FORTUNE ALL TIMES were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ON SHAN EXPRESS and FORTUNE ALL TIMES after the race did not show any significant findings. PAY-DAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, PAY-DAY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was distressed and uncoordinated. Before being allowed to race again, PAY-DAY will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HAPPY ALL AROUND and CARE FREE PRINCE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 2 June 2005)
PAY-DAY, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time the horse was distressed and uncoordinated. PAY-DAY was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer D E Ferraris this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse was lame in the left front leg. As previously advised, PAY-DAY will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
