Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, ONE EYE JACK bounded in the air and made heavy contact with the inside of its stall, then on jumping blundered and was checked when crowded for room between MILLIONS SUCCESS which shifted out and GIDDY KIPPER which shifted in. As a result of this, ONE EYE JACK lost a significant amount of ground and got well back. CITY GLORY was slow to begin and was then steadied away from the heels of PERFECT GALLANT which was carried in by CLAWS OF THUNDER. HARVEST GALA was slow to begin. In the early stages, MILLION SUCCESS, which was having its first start in blinkers, proved difficult to settle, and near the 800 Metres was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of OPTIC CHIEF. ONE EYE JACK, which was racing inside MILLION SUCCESS, was checked in consequence. Near the 700 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT got its head up when being steadied to shift to the inside of MILLION SUCCESS. Making the Home Turn, LAZY BUDDIES hung out. Just prior to straightening, PERFECT GALLANT was steadied and shifted to the outside of ONE EYE JACK. After the 400 Metres, OPTIC CHIEF and MILLION SUCCESS raced tight as MILLION SUCCESS was trying to improve inside CLAWS OF THUNDER which when commencing to give ground got its head on the side and shifted in. After the 300 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of LOK WAH TREASURE. In the Straight, HARVEST GALA hung in. R Fradd (MAIN ATTRACTION) said he had been instructed to ride the horse positively from the start. He said it was anticipated GREAT KID would lead the race and he should endeavour to be in front of midfield. He said he rode MAIN ATTRACTION along in the early stages as the horse felt lazy underneath him and as a consequence MAIN ATTRACTION crossed to the fence and led. He said he then steadied the tempo, believing GREAT KID would cross and leave him with a nice trailing position, however, when this did not eventuate he continued to allow MAIN ATTRACTION to lead at a tempo to which it was suited. When questioned regarding GIDDY KIPPER racing back in the field, S Dye said the intention had been to have the horse travel in 5th or 6th position as it was felt to lead with the horse's large weight would make it difficult for it to close the race off. He said when the gates opened GIDDY KIPPER began a little awkwardly and did not travel into the bridle as it has done previously. He said he urged GIDDY KIPPER along, however, the horse failed to muster speed and consequently got well back. He said for some distance after the 1200 Metres he considered endeavouring to improve between PERFECT GALLANT and ONE EYE JACK, however PERFECT GALLANT was shifting ground, he therefore decided against doing so. He said at the 700 Metres he commenced to shift away from the fence and PERFECT GALLANT which he was following got into difficulty in front of him, he therefore checked to avoid the heels of that horse. He said after straightening he shifted GIDDY KIPPER to the outside and rode the horse along vigorously and it commenced to close the race off fairly, however, in his opinion its run ended short of the line. D Whyte (OPTIC CHIEF), which performed poorly, said whilst the horse had previously won on rain affected ground the manner in which it travelled in this race indicated it did not handle today's track conditions. He said at no stage of the race was OPTIC CHIEF travelling comfortably and was under pressure a considerable distance from home. ONE EYE JACK was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ONE EYE JACK after the race did not show any significant findings. OPTIC CHIEF, LAZY BUDDIES and MAIN ATTRACTION were sent for sampling.
