Racing Incident Report
REWARDING KING was withdrawn on 22.4.05 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by first Standby Declared Starter ENGINEERING WONDER (Apprentice H W Lai). CALIFORNIA PRINCE was also withdrawn on 22.4.05 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left hind) and was replaced by second Standby Declared Starter SUDDEN SPLENDOR (L Innes). Before being allowed to race again, REWARDING KING and CALIFORNIA PRINCE will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When the gates opened, ENGINEERING WONDER got its head up, began awkwardly and lost a considerable amount of ground. GOOD TRIO was slow to begin. LUCKY DANSKE bounded in the air at the start. In the early stages, SENSIBLE WAY hung in, making the turn at the 800 Metres shifted ground and bumped FLYING SPRINTER. For some distance after this, FLYING SPRINTER raced tight inside SENSIBLE WAY. After the 900 Metres, ONE SHOT, which was endeavouring to remain racing away from the rail, shifted out and bumped with GOOD TRIO. After the 400 Metres, on several occasions LUCKY DANSKE and SMART CHAMPION bumped after SMART CHAMPION had shifted to the outside of SENSIBLE WAY into clear running. Near the 300 Metres, BRAINS TRUST got its head up and shifted out, then near the 200 Metres shifted back in when not properly clear of FLYING SPRINTER which was momentarily steadied. From a wide gate, for the major part of the race, MY LUCK raced wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, ROYAL DECREE, Mr D J Hall, trainer of the horse, said he had been disappointed with the manner in which the horse had been finishing its races off after travelling keenly in the run. He said he noted after the horse's last start it was breathing heavily on return to scale. He said he therefore elected to remove the blinkers from the gear in which ROYAL DECREE was racing in an endeavour to have the horse travel more kindly in the run, thereby enabling it to finish the race off. He said the horse had trialed nicely at Happy Valley in the lead up to today's race after relaxing in the early stages. When questioned regarding his riding in the Home Straight, Apprentice H W Lai (ENGINEERING WONDER) said with the rail in the A position today, he was instructed to look for running on the outside as it was felt clear running would be difficult to obtain close to the rail. He said because of these instructions on straightening he commenced to shift to the outside of OSCAR STAR in the hope of being able to improve his position. He said when he commenced to shift, clear running was available, however, as he shifted so too did OSCAR STAR and as a result he was unable to improve between that horse and AMSTERDAM which at this time hung in. He said ENGINEERING WONDER was then held up for running for some distance and after the 300 Metres was again steadied when disappointed for running between MY LUCK and AMSTERDAM. He said following this ENGINEERING WONDER continued to be held up for some distance, after the 200 Metres he shifted back towards the inside of OSCAR STAR in the hope of improving inside that runner, however, as he was shifting in SMART CHAMPION which was racing inside OSCAR STAR commenced to give ground and consequently he ended up being awkwardly placed on the heels of that horse in the run to the line. Mr L Ho, trainer of ENGINEERING WONDER, confirmed the riding instructions given to Apprentice Lai and said he accepted Apprentice Lai endeavouring to obtain runs on the outside despite clear running being available towards the inside. Apprentice Lai was told his riding had come under notice on this occasion and he was at all times to ensure he was aware of options available to him to improve his position and to avoid being held up for running. He was further told he must at all times ride his mounts in a manner which is not open to query. SENSIBLE WAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SENSIBLE WAY after the race did not show any significant findings. ROYAL DECREE and LUCKY DANSKE were sent for sampling.
