Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, ONLY YOU stood flat-footed and lost a considerable amount of ground. On jumping, HAWKIE STAR and GIFTED RUNNER became unbalanced when crowded for room between PERSEVERANCE which shifted in and STRIKE TO WIN which shifted out. In this incident, STRIKE TO WIN also became unbalanced. In the early stages, DR HAENSLER, with the intention of being ridden quietly, proved very difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. Near the 1000 Metres, CONSTELLATION was steadied when crowded for room inside ENRICHING (Apprentice K W Tsui) which shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice Tsui was reprimanded and told to exercise more care. At the 1000 Metres, PERSEVERANCE became unbalanced when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SHINING DAY which at this time shifted in away from ENRICHING. When PERSEVERANCE became unbalanced, JADE DANCER, which was racing to its outside, was hampered in consequence. At the 800 Metres, STRIKE TO WIN was unable to maintain its position when crowded for room inside GIFTED RUNNER which itself was crowded for room inside SHINING DAY which was racing tight inside CONSTELLATION. Making the Home Turn, PERSEVERANCE hung out. On straightening, DR HAENSLER was held up and unable to improve between METRO FLYER and SOLAR POWER. DR HAENSLER was then steadied, shifted to the inside of METRO FLYER and for some distance had difficulty obtaining clear running. Also on straightening, SOLAR POWER was bumped by METRO FLYER which was shifting to the outside of PERSEVERANCE into clear running. When questioned regarding the improved performance of ENRICHING, Mr C H Yip, trainer of the horse, said he had been surprised by the horse's win. He did say in his opinion the horse's best run in Hong Kong was over the same course and distance in a higher grade when being ridden by Apprentice K W Tsui who again rode the horse today. He said in the past ENRICHING raced in a blinker with one cowl only because of a tendency to hang in in the Straight, however, he decided to remove that gear from the horse's equipment to see if it would race more truly which it appeared to do. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of STRIKE TO WIN, Apprentice C K Tong, the horse's rider, said after being crowded for room near the 800 Metres STRIKE TO WIN appeared to resent racing between runners and was reluctant to stride out. He said he was unable to offer any other explanation for the performance of the horse. STRIKE TO WIN was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of STRIKE TO WIN after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of STRIKE TO WIN was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, STRIKE TO WIN will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GIFTED RUNNER and DR HAENSLER were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GIFTED RUNNER after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, DR HAENSLER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, DR HAENSLER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ENRICHING and HAWKIE STAR were sent for sampling.
