Racing Incident Report
MILLION SUCCESS and KING PALM were slow to begin. PRESENT TREASURE began awkwardly, shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of THE ONLY ONE. Making the turn after passing the winning post on the first occasion, A-TACK was steadied when awkwardly placed between LEGIONNAIRE and KING PALM. At the 600 Metres, COURAGEOUSHEART and MILLION SUCCESS raced tight. Also at the 600 Metres, A-TACK was bumped by PRESENT TREASURE which was tight inside the heels of CHEERFUL BOY. Shortly after straightening, KING PALM was carried wider after being bumped by PRESENT TREASURE which was steadied and shifted to the outside of LEGIONNAIRE into clear running. Near the 100 Metres, ALWAYS ZIETEN was momentarily tightened for room inside THE ONLY ONE which was inclined to shift in. M Rodd (COURAGEOUSHEART) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in about 5th position if possible. He said on jumping COURAGEOUSHEART shifted in towards CHEERFUL BOY, it then took him a few strides to get COURAGEOUSHEART balanced and as a result the horse got further back than he had hoped. He said from after passing the winning post on the first occasion he rode COURAGEOUSHEART vigorously throughout and on several occasions in the run struck the horse with the whip and it continued to close the race off. He did point out when racing at Sha Tin COURAGEOUSHEART had been travelling in a more forward position, however, in its recent runs at Happy Valley the horse has always been well back. When questioned regarding the poor performance of KING PALM, D Whyte said the horse travelled satisfactorily for the first half of the race when held together, however, when he commenced to push along after the 700 Metres KING PALM became unbalanced in its action and then did not feel comfortable when under pressure for the remainder of the race. He said in his opinion KING PALM despite having been placed on rain affected going in the past raced in a manner which indicated it did not handle the conditions of tonight's track. LEGIONNAIRE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LEGIONNAIRE after the race did not show any significant findings. CHEERFUL BOY, CHINA WORLD and THE ONLY ONE were sent for sampling.
