Racing Incident Report
GOOD HEART, KA KA WIN, CHERISHED and CIRCUIT KINGDOM were slow to begin. THUNDER MAN began awkwardly and got its head up. Near the 1500 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER was steadied to avoid the heels of FUJI SUNRISE which shifted in when only just clear. When HANDBAG PREMIER steadied, some inconvenience was caused to BOUNTIFUL. In the early stages, CHERISHED raced wide and without cover and because of this was allowed to travel forward. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, BOUNTIFUL got its head up when steadied away from the heels of CHERISHED. After the 400 Metres, FUJI SUNRISE was crowded for room and had difficulty obtaining clear running between TRAVEL LEADER and CIRCUIT KINGDOM which after initially shifting out shifted back in. Also after the 400 Metres, KA KA WIN, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was shifted out. For some distance after the 400 Metres, BOUNTIFUL was held up and unable to obtain clear running between WISE CHOICE which was racing tight inside GOOD HEART (C Soumillon) and CHERISHED. Near the 300 Metres, BOUNTIFUL was disappointed for running between CHERISHED which shifted out and WISE CHOICE which continued to race tight inside GOOD HEART, clipped the heels of CHERISHED, blundered and almost fell. In this incident, WISE CHOICE was also steadied and KA KA WIN, which was following BOUNTIFUL, was steadied and shifted in to avoid that horse. As the Stewards were satisfied BOUNTIFUL had not properly established running, no action was taken. C Soumillon was warned over the evidence he tendered during the course of this inquiry. When BOUNTIFUL blundered, D Whyte, the horse's rider, lost the use of his right stirrup for a short distance and after this BOUNTIFUL was not ridden out to the line. Near the 300 Metres, C Williams (FUJI SUNRISE) reached down with his left hand and adjusted his foot in the stirrup. Approaching the 200 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER was unable to obtain clear running behind TRAVEL LEADER and inside GOLD FIELD. Apprentice C W Wong (TEMMOKU) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in about midfield with cover if possible. He said TEMMOKU began well, he rode along for a short distance, then steadied his mount in the hope of being able to obtain cover, however, because runners were bunched to his inside, he was racing wide and without cover. He said he therefore decided to restrain his mount, take it back to the rear and race closer to the rail. Apprentice Wong was told his riding on this occasion had caused concern to the Stewards and in their opinion he had overdone the restraining of his mount in the early stages, particularly in what was a slowly run race. When questioned regarding the poor performance of WISE CHOICE, O Doleuze said when BOUNTIFUL shifted out on his inside after the 1200 Metres he was then obliged to race wide and without cover. He said he continued to race wide and without cover in the middles stages and shortly after straightening the horse came under pressure and failed to respond. He said he did receive some crowding near the 300 Metres, but this was in the circumstances of little significance. He said after this crowding WISE CHOICE gave ground. BOUNTIFUL and WISE CHOICE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BOUNTIFUL and WISE CHOICE after the race did not show any significant findings. GOLD FIELD and FUJI SUNRISE were sent for sampling.
