Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, S Dye reported during the preliminary the horse slipped. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said after the necessary consultations it was suitable to race. When the gates opened, GOT IT GOOD reared, began very awkwardly and as a consequence lost a significant amount of ground. At the 1500 Metres, JUBILOSO was steadied when crowded for room outside ELFHELM which was carried out by ZU GUO STAR. At the 1400 Metres, ELFHELM was crowded for room between OLIVE OR TWIST and ZU GUO STAR which commenced to shift out. Near the 1300 Metres, TELECOM TYCOON was bumped by JUBILOSO which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of ELFHELM. Shortly after this, JUBILOSO was steadied away from the heels of ELFHELM. Prior to straightening, MASTER ABLE was shifted to the outside of ZU GUO STAR which was giving ground. After the 400 Metres, JUBILOSO was steadied and shifted to the outside of ELFHELM to continue going forward. After this, JUBILOSO hung in. Apprentice H W Lai (TELECOM SUPERBOSS) said he had been instructed to lead if possible, however, if it was not able to cross to the fence he should sit outside the lead. He said TELECOM SUPERBOSS began well and when clear he immediately started to shift across, however, runners to his inside were ridden along to maintain their positions. He said because of this he continued to ride TELECOM SUPERBOSS along in an endeavour to clear those runners and near the 1100 Metres shifted across to race outside DESERT STORM. He said when that horse continued on to clear ON SHAN EXPRESS he went forward with it and then near the 700 Metres steadied his mount to race outside the lead. Mr L Ho, trainer of TELECOM SUPERBOSS, confirmed the instructions issued and said TELECOM SUPERBOSS in the past had performed best when able to lead. He said he was surprised DESERT STORM went forward with TELECOM SUPERBOSS and as TELECOM SUPERBOSS was going to be trapped wide he accepted Apprentice Lai's explanation for continuing on. Apprentice Lai was told in the opinion of the Stewards he had overdone his instructions on this occasion and he should always be conscious of asking his horse to do too much work in the run. When questioned about DESERT STORM leading today, D Holland said he had been instructed to have the horse begin well and then endeavour to ride it somewhere about midfield as the horse had drawn a more favourable barrier today than in its recent starts. He said in accordance with those instructions he jumped DESERT STORM from the barriers, allowed it to stride forward for a short distance, the horse immediately travelled into the bridle and he then allowed the horse to continue on at its own speed. He said he was somewhat surprised DESERT STORM led the field, but at no stage did he ride the horse along to obtain that position. He said when the horse was travelling comfortably going forward, he felt it was in the best interests of the horse not to restrain it. Mr D Hill, trainer of DESERT STORM, confirmed the instructions issued to D Holland. He said at its most recent start DESERT STORM travelled more keenly than is usual and after viewing the film today he again believed DESERT STORM travelled more keenly than the horse usually does and because of this raced much further forward, however, this was also in part due to TELECOM SUPERBOSS being hard ridden to race to his outside. He said he was satisfied D Holland did not restrain the horse as in his opinion DESERT STORM is best suited being allowed to run its own race. He said he was surprised with the pace shown by DESERT STORM today. Mr Hill said DESERT STORM will now be given a brief let-up and when it resumes racing it will be his intention to have the horse ridden in midfield or behind. The explanations submitted by D Holland and Mr Hill were accepted. W M Lai (ON SHAN EXPRESS) said he had been instructed to lead if possible, however, because of the pace in the early stages prior to the 800 Metres he attempted to steady his mount and take a sit. He said in the Straight ON SHAN EXPRESS gave ground noticeably and in his opinion this might have been due to the pace of the race in the early stages. OLIVE OR TWIST was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of OLIVE OR TWIST after the race did not show any significant findings. GOLD SANDFIELD and TELECOM TYCOON were sent for sampling. After the race, A Delpech (AUSPICIOUS ODYSSEY) reported the horse was not striding out freely. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. Following the race, S K Sit, the rider of ZU GUO STAR which gave ground in the Straight and finished tailed out, reported the horse was unstable in its action. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer and he said ZU GUO STAR was agitated and distressed. Mr S Woods, trainer of ZU GUO STAR, advised the Stewards he will speak with the owners regarding the horse's future and following that he will report back to the Stewards.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 27 January 2005)
After the race, A Delpech, the rider of AUSPICIOUS ODYSSEY, reported the horse was not striding out freely. The horse was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. AUSPICIOUS ODYSSEY was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C S Shum this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, AUSPICIOUS ODYSSEY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
