Racing Incident Report
CHOICE AND CHANCE began awkwardly and lost a significant amount of ground at the start. On jumping, WISHING WELL knuckled and lost ground. MAXIMUM JOY was slow to begin. GOLDEN DRAGON and GOT IT GOOD began awkwardly. In the middle stages, FAIRPLAY hung out. In the early part of the Straight, MASTER SPIRIT hung in. C Williams (CHOICE AND CHANCE) said he had been instructed if possible to save ground on the horse during the run and not to "expose" the horse before straightening. He said CHOICE AND CHANCE began badly again today as it often does and he then gradually made up lost ground to follow GOT IT GOOD into the first turn. He said near the 600 Metres he rode along to maintain that position. He said GOT IT GOOD came under pressure prior to straightening and he anticipated that horse would drift away from the rail which would enable him to improve on that horse's inside. He said GOT IT GOOD did not drift away from the rail, shortly after straightening ROYAL EXCHANGE commenced to give ground which prevented him from shifting out, he therefore remained behind GOT IT GOOD and when that horse did shift out near the 250 Metres, he commenced to improve on its inside into a position behind GENKI KING. He said GENKI KING did not go on as he expected and as such he remained held up behind that runner for some distance as he was not able to shift out due to insufficient room. He said near the 200 Metres he shifted towards the inside of GENKI KING, however, was disappointed for that run, therefore remained held up and as a consequence was not able to properly test CHOICE AND CHANCE. Mr T W Leung, trainer of CHOICE AND CHANCE, confirmed the riding instructions issued to C Williams. He said he is of the firm opinion as he has stated previously that CHOICE AND CHANCE possess a sprint of less than 400 Metres and therefore he had instructed C Williams to ensure he did not "expose" the horse until after straightening. He said on previous occasions CHOICE AND CHANCE had failed to finish its races off if put into the open before the 400 Metres. R Fradd (GENKI KING) was not able to offer any explanation for the horse's poor performance. He said GENKI KING began well, raced into the lead and remained racing inside GOLDEN DRAGON. He said at the 600 Metres GENKI KING was not travelling as it ought to have been and when GOLDEN DRAGON pressed on forward of it, GENKI KING was unable to maintain its position. He said in the Straight GENKI KING failed to respond to his riding. GENKI KING was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, GENKI KING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed the horse to have an epiglottic entrapment (breathing obstruction). Before being allowed to race again, GENKI KING will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOLDEN DRAGON and MAXIMUM JOY were sent for sampling.
