Racing Incident Report
At declarations, G Mossé was mistakenly declared to ride AIN'T HERE when he had previously accepted the engagement to ride INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS. As B Prebble had been engaged to ride AIN'T HERE, the Stewards permitted his substitution. For this mistake, Mr D A Hayes, the trainer of AIN'T HERE, was fined $2,000. For the major part of the race, INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS raced wide and without cover. A Starke (SATURN) said he had been instructed not to "fight the horse". He said in the early stages he allowed SATURN to travel forward and attempted to shift across and race outside BEETHOVEN which was the initial leader. He said when he got close to BEETHOVEN, SATURN proved difficult to settle, however, bearing in mind his instruction he allowed the horse to stride forward after the 1600 Metres and crossed to the fence in the lead in the hope that it would then relax. He said after reaching the lead SATURN continued to over-race and at no stage was it settled for him. He said he was concerned regarding the pace SATURN was setting, however, being issued what in his opinion was straight riding instruction not to "fight the horse", he was reluctant to endeavour to restrain it and steady the pace. Mr C Fownes, trainer of SATURN, confirmed the instructions issued to A Starke. He said in the past the horse had shown itself to be "a handful" when being restrained. SATURN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SATURN after the race did not show any significant findings. BULLISH LUCK, AIN'T HERE and BOWMAN'S CROSSING were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported SUPREME RABBIT was making an abnormal breathing noise.
