Racing Incident Report
NORTHERN POWER was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was checked to avoid the heels of HONOURABLE which shifted out. From the outside gate, WAFER KING was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. Near the 1100 Metres, KING ERIE, which was racing tight inside SALUT BEAUTE, got its head on the side, shifted in and was checked away from the heels of PRO JOY. Approaching the 1000 Metres, SUPREME STAR got its head up and shifted in away from ROYAL EXCHANGE. This caused some inconvenience to ATHLETIC GOLD. NORTHERN POWER made the turn at the 1000 Metres awkwardly, shifted out and was checked when awkwardly placed inside PRO JOY. ROYAL EXCHANGE hung out making the turn at the 1000 Metres, then got its head up when proving difficult to settle after the 800 Metres and again hung out making the Home Turn and ran off. The performance of ROYAL EXCHANGE was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, ROYAL EXCHANGE will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, KING ERIE and HANDBAG PREMIER were momentarily crowded for room inside SUPREME STAR which got its head on the side and hung in. For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, SUPREME STAR was held up and unable to improve when racing awkwardly and close to the heels of ATHLETIC GOLD which at this time was giving ground. After the 200 Metres, KING ERIE was crowded for room inside WAFER KING which improved on its outside. Also after the 200 Metres, SUPREME STAR was checked away from the heels of ATHLETIC GOLD. When questioned regarding the improved performance of WAFER KING, Mr C S Shum, trainer of the horse, said the only explanation he could offer was the horse appreciated racing in blinkers for the first time. He said last Monday he himself rode WAFER KING on the 1800 Metre gallop wearing this gear and the horse had shown a definite improvement in its work. SALUT BEAUTE and ROYAL EXCHANGE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SALUT BEAUTE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SALUT BEAUTE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of ROYAL EXCHANGE after the race did not show any significant findings. PRO JOY, WAFER KING and HANDBAG PREMIER were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the trachea of FLYING EAGLE. Before being allowed to race again, FLYING EAGLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. The Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and riding of PRESENT TREASURE. Evidence was tonight taken from C Williams, the rider of PRESENT TREASURE, and Mr C Fownes, the trainer of the horse. The inquiry was adjourned to a date and time to be fixed.
