Racing Incident Report
FREE WAY was withdrawn on 4.9.04 on veterinary grounds (lame right front foot) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter TRI-STAR (B Prebble). Before being allowed to race again, FREE WAY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TRI-STAR and EQUUS ZEPHYRUS were slow to begin. Near the 1200 Metres, SWEETIE was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between EQUUS ZEPHYRUS and MAESTRO. At the 1100 Metres, FORTUNE MAPLE was checked when crowded for room between BAYVIEW LAD and COSMO STAR which when proving difficult to settle was awkwardly placed inside the heels of ACME OF SURPRISE (G Schofield) which shifted in when not quite clear. Having in mind the manner in which COSMO STAR was racing, the Stewards severely reprimanded G Schofield and advised him to exercise more care. Near the 800 Metres, WINNING EMPEROR stumbled after clipping the heels of FORTUNE MAPLE which at this time was steadied when awkwardly placed between BAYVIEW LAD and HAPPY KID which had its head on the side and was inclined to shift in. In the circumstances, no action was taken. After the 400 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT was steadied away from the heels of SWEETIE (S Dye) which shifted out when attempting to improve on the outside of WINNING EMPEROR which itself at this time shifted ground. S Dye was reprimanded and told he would be expected to exercise greater care. Approaching the 200 Metres, HAPPY KID got its head on the side and hung out. Because of this at the 200 Metres, Y Lerner, its rider, changed the whip into his left hand. HAPPY KID then shifted in and raced tight with WATCHMAN over the concluding stages. G Schofield, 7th placegetter, was reminded of his responsibility to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the winning post where possible. G Mossé (COSMO STAR), which performed poorly, explained the horse raced keenly in the early stages and as a result travelled further forward than is usual. He said in the middle stages COSMO STAR raced wide and without cover, continued to race keenly and in his opinion was holding its breath. As a consequence of the manner in which COSMO STAR had raced in the early and middle stages, G Mossé said after the 300 Metres the horse gave ground noticeably. He did say COSMO STAR had been working "brilliantly" in the lead up to today's race and was expected by the connections to win. COSMO STAR was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, COSMO STAR was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. WATCHMAN and WINNING EMPEROR were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted BAYVIEW LAD had lost its right hind plate.
