Racing Incident Report
TAIJI SPIRIT and HAPPY TOGETHER were slow to begin. SCREAMING EAGLE began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. At the 900 Metres, SCREAMING EAGLE, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of KINGSTON GLORY. Just prior to straightening when placed under pressure, DR WELL became unbalanced. Near the 300 Metres, HAPPY TOGETHER was steadied away from the heels of DR WELL. TELECOM TYCOON, which was following HAPPY TOGETHER and having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied in consequence. For a considerable distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, KINGSTON GLORY was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind FUJI SUNRISE and inside SCREAMING EAGLE. Near the 200 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER and FUJI SUNRISE were checked when crowded for room between NOBLE HEART and SCREAMING EAGLE (Apprentice C K Tong) which at this time got its head on the side and shifted ground while hanging. Apprentice Tong was severely reprimanded and told whilst he was making some effort to prevent SCREAMING EAGLE shifting ground, in similar circumstances he would be expected to do more than he did on this occasion. For a considerable distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, SWEET SMILE was steadied when held up and unable to improve behind DR WELL and NOBLE HEART which were giving ground. Near the 100 Metres, DR WELL became unbalanced when momentarily crowded for room between MASTER MARAUDER and SCREAMING EAGLE which shifted in while hanging when not properly clear. For the major part of the race, ORIENTAL raced wide and without cover and then in the Straight gave ground. G Mossé (FUJI SUNRISE) said he had been instructed to allow the horse to stride forward if it was travelling satisfactorily. Mr D A Hayes, the trainer of FUJI SUNRISE, said the horse in its previous race starts had been getting back and despite finishing the races off had only managed to run behind the placings. He said therefore today in a race which he anticipated there would only be a moderate speed, he instructed G Mossé to allow the horse to travel forward and attempt to find cover if possible. He said the manner in which the race was run allowed FUJI SUNRISE to travel forward without being made use of, however, it was obliged to race three wide and without cover as the field remained compact in the early stages. After the race, D Whyte, the rider of HANDBAG PREMIER, reported the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise. HANDBAG PREMIER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, HANDBAG PREMIER was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. FUJI SUNRISE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of FUJI SUNRISE after the race did not show any significant findings. DR WELL, KINGSTON GLORY and SCREAMING EAGLE were sent for sampling.
