Racing Incident Report
DANEPRINT and WINNING WAYS were slow to begin. TOP OF THE CROWN was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was crowded for room by PLEASANT SUCCESS which shifted out. Near the winning post the first time, DJEREED was crowded for room inside MAESTRO which itself was racing tight inside TELECOM BABE. In the early stages, WE'RE BUDDIES raced wide and without cover. After the 1200 Metres, TOP OF THE CROWN went amiss and was eased out of the race. When TOP OF THE CROWN went amiss, MAESTRO and PLEASANT SUCCESS, which were following, were severely checked and lost a considerable amount of ground. Near the 600 Metres, TELECOM BABE, which was inclined to lay in, was steadied away from the heels of WINNING ASSOCIATES which at that time shifted out slightly. On straightening, PERFECT GALLANT was steadied away from the heels of WINNING WAYS. Near the 100 Metres, EQUUS ZEPHYRUS was carried wider by DJEREED which shifted out. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether ASIA STAR should be declared the winner of the race. Further, two protests/objections were lodged. The first by C Williams, the rider of WINNING WAYS, 4th placegetter, against DANEPRINT (G Mossé) being declared 3rd placegetter alleging interference to his mount after the 200 Metres. The second by Mr Wong Yat Cheung, the owner of WE'RE BUDDIES, ridden by D Whyte and 2nd placegetter, against ASIA STAR (S K Sit) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount on the Home Turn and after the 200 Metres. After taking evidence from all relevant parties and viewing the official videos of the race, the Stewards decided C Williams' protest/objection should be overruled. In arriving at this decision, they determined that after the 200 Metres WINNING WAYS shifted towards the inside of ASIA STAR and when improving towards that position again changed course outwards as a result of DANEPRINT shifting some ground. However, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that WINNING WAYS had properly established rightful running between DANEPRINT and ASIA STAR. The Stewards also decided Mr Wong's protest/objection against ASIA STAR should be overruled. They determined on straightening WE'RE BUDDIES and ASIA STAR raced tight, then approaching the 200 Metres WE'RE BUDDIES shifted in and made contact with ASIA STAR. After this, WE'RE BUDDIES was carried out slightly by ASIA STAR. The Stewards were of the opinion WE'RE BUDDIES had caused the initial contact between the two horses and further they could not be comfortably satisfied that had the horse not been carried out in the manner in which it was over the concluding stages it would have finished in front of ASIA STAR. As a result of these decisions, the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. DANEPRINT, ASIA STAR and WE'RE BUDDIES were sent for sampling.
