Racing Incident Report
BEAR DOMINANCE was slow to begin. SUNSEEN began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of CALIFORNIA PRINCE which got its head on the side and shifted in away from HEALTHY WEALTHY. On jumping, DENDRANTHEMA LOVE got its head up. Shortly after the start, the saddle on CELESTIAL STEEL shifted forward. This placed Apprentice H W Lai, the horse's rider, at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race. In the early and middle stages, FIVE GRAINS proved very difficult to settle and a number of occasions got its head up, then near the 700 Metres was checked away from the heels of KIDDY SING. Near the 1600 Metres, CALIFORNIA PRINCE, which was also proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of FIVE GRAINS. At the 700 Metes, DENDRANTHEMA LOVE got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SUNSEEN which itself was being steadied away from the heels of FIVE GRAINS. After the 300 Metres, AMBITIOUS TYCOON was steadied and shifted to the outside of CALIFORNIA PRINCE to obtain clear running. This caused some inconvenience to CONNOISSEUR'S LOVE and DENDRANTHEMA LOVE which were racing to the outside of AMBITIOUS TYCOON. In the Straight, DENDRANTHEMA LOVE hung in and SUNSEEN got its head on the side and hung in. For the major part of the race, CONNOISSEUR'S LOVE raced wide and without cover. W M Lai (AMBITIOUS TYCOON) said he had been instructed from a wide barrier to ride the horse in midfield with cover if possible. He said AMBITIOUS TYCOON began well, he immediately restrained the horse in an attempt to find cover, to do so meant he had to take AMBITIOUS TYCOON back and shift across to follow CALIFORNIA PRINCE. He said near the 1600 Metres when the field bunched in front of him because of the pace, CALIFORNIA PRINCE lost its position and he then had to steady away from the heels of that horse which resulted in him being further back than he had intended. Mr C H Yip, trainer of the horse, confirmed the riding instructions issued to W M Lai and said he was concerned if ridden in a forward position AMBITIOUS TYCOON which was stepping up to 1800 Metres today would not finish the race off. The explanations submitted by W M Lai and Mr Yip were accepted. SUNSEEN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SUNSEEN after the race failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. FIVE GRAINS, HEALTHY WEALTHY and CELEBRATION were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 14 April 2004)
SONGS OF PRAISE was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes on 12 April 2004. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the left hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, SONGS OF PRAISE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
