Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, CLAWS OF THUNDER was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. MULTI RANSOM began awkwardly and shortly afterwards was bumped by JUST TOO GOOD which shifted in away from MAMOUSKA, then making the first turn proved difficult to settle and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of CORNWALL CHIEFS. Making the first turn, VENETIAN MASTER was steadied away from the heels of GREAT SENSATION. For some distance approaching and passing the 600 Metres, GREAT SENSATION was awkwardly placed behind OPTIC CHIEF and inside CLAWS OF THUNDER. For some distance after straightening, JUST TOO GOOD was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind VENETIAN MASTER and inside ENORMOUS WAY. To obtain clear running near the 300 Metres, JUST TOO GOOD was steadied and shifted to the outside of MULTI RANSOM. S Dye (BOUNTIFUL) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 300 Metes he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of FLORAL DANCER, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. CLAWS OF THUNDER, which was following, was hampered in consequence. In the circumstances of this case, it was believed the appropriate penalty was for S Dye to be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 22 April 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The Stewards acceded to an application from S Dye that the suspension commence with immediate effect. O Doleuze (MAMOUSKA) said it had been explained to him prior to the race the horse had previously performed well when ridden in front, he was therefore told he should lead if possible and prevent other runners improving around him mid-race. He said after beginning well he rode MAMOUSKA along in the early stages to ensure it obtained the lead. He said after the first turn he allowed MAMOUSKA to continue rolling along, but did not ride it along. He said he realized the pace in the early stages was quick, however, in the middle stages he was then able to steady the pace somewhat. He said while the early pace was quick, he believed he had ridden MAMOUSKA to instructions. Mr C H Hip, the trainer of MAMOUSKA, said he had instructed O Doleuze to lead if possible and if he was able to obtain the lead, he should not allow another horse to improve around it. He said following the race O Doleuze explained to him he had to ride MAMOUSKA along in the early stages to obtain the lead. Mr Yip said in his opinion the pace of the race in the early stages was quick, however, he accepted O Doleuze allowed MAMOUSKA to steady the tempo after entering the Back Straight and in the circumstances he was satisfied with his riding. S Dye (BOUNTIFUL) explained from the outside barrier he was unable to obtain a position with cover and as such he raced three wide. He said entering the Back Straight he elected to allow BOUNTIFUL to stride forward as in his opinion during this section the pace of the race slowed somewhat and he felt to do so would enable him to obtain a position two wide which was preferential to remaining racing wide without cover. G Mossé (DIVINE FEELING) said it had been the intention to ride the horse quietly today. He said DIVINE FEELING began well, immediately travelled forward and he therefore allowed MAMOUSKA to cross to the lead on the fence, followed that horse across and raced to its outside and behind it. He said he was aware the pace for this class was strong in the early stages, however, he did not believe it would be in the best interest of DIVINE FEELING to fight the horse. He said throughout the race DIVINE FEELING wanted to hang in and in the Back Straight hung in badly, then after the 1200 Metres when BOUNTIFUL had improved around his outside, DIVINE FEELING was proving difficult to ride because of it hanging, he therefore slapped it down the right shoulder with the whip in an attempt to get it to straighten. He said however when he did this, DIVINE FEELING travelled forward with him and at the same time BOUNTIFUL which was crossing from his outside commenced to steady, he therefore checked away from the heels of BOUNTIFUL. He said making the turn at the 800 Metres DIVINE FEELING hung in across the heels of FLYING DRAGON to momentarily race on the fence, then in the Straight gave ground. The explanation of G Mossé was accepted. DIVINE FEELING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of DIVINE FEELING after the race failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. BOUNTIFUL, CORNWALL CHIEFS and ENORMOUS WAY were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 13 April 2004)
DIVINE FEELING, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. DIVINE FEELING was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes yesterday morning. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, DIVINE FEELING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
