Racing Incident Report
CHOICE AND CHANCE began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, A-TACK was checked when crowded for room between FLYING SPRINTER which was carried in by MASCOT and GREAT VALUE which was carried out by ISLAND SPIRIT. DO IT WELL was slow to muster speed. On jumping, VIPER CORP dipped. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, GREAT VALUE hung out and was checked to avoid the heels of CHOICE AND CHANCE. A-TACK, which was following, was checked in consequence. After this incident, GREAT VALUE continued to hang out badly and in the Straight was eased down. After the race, it was noted GREAT VALUE had bled from both nostrils. Near the 700 Metres, after being crossed by KING'S SUCCESS, FLYING SPRINTER was reluctant to hold its position and lost ground. TOP HEALTH, which was following FLYING SPRINTER, was checked to avoid the heels of that horse and in turn DO IT WELL was checked to avoid the heels of TOP HEALTH. Shortly after this, DO IT WELL, which had shifted to the outside of TOP HEALTH, was checked when crowded between that horse and ISLAND SPIRIT which was carried in by MASCOT which itself was crowded for room and steadied inside the heels of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (O Doleuze) which shifted in slightly. As the Stewards believed DO IT WELL as a result of the earlier inconvenience it had received contributed to this incident, no action was taken other than to tell O Doleuze to exercise care at all times. Just prior to the winning post, DO IT WELL was brushed by KING'S SUCCESS which shifted out. Throughout the race, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY raced wide and without cover. O Doleuze (FOR YOUR EYES ONLY) said the horse was not able to obtain cover from its wide draw, responded only fairly in the Straight, but about 50 Metres from the winning post commenced to give ground and became unbalanced in its action, therefore he did not ride it out to the line as he normally would. A Marcus (CHOICE AND CHANCE) said he enjoyed a good run behind the speed in the race. He said despite travelling four wide, he at all times had cover and he expected the horse to close the race off strongly, however, when asked for an effort after straightening, the horse failed to respond. He was unable to offer any explanation for its poor performance. CHOICE AND CHANCE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, CHOICE AND CHANCE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said it was coughing. An endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, CHOICE AND CHANCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. IN THE BANK, TOP HEALTH and FLYING SPRINTER were sent for sampling.
