Racing Incident Report
PREMIER CRU was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, RAINBOW DIAMOND was steadied when crowded for room between SAVINGS ACCOUNT and JOIN VICTORY which shifted out. Near the 1300 Metres, SAVINGS ACCOUNT was steadied when crowded for room inside JUSTINIAN which got its head on the side and shifted in away from BARFOLD HERO. In the early stages, BARFOLD HERO proved very difficult to settle. Also in the early stages, SAVINGS ACCOUNT proved difficult to settle, after the 1000 Metres got its head up and shifted out away from the heels of JOIN VICTORY. This caused some inconvenience to PREMIER CRU. After straightening, RAINBOW DIAMOND was steadied away from the heels of SAVINGS ACCOUNT. Near the 200 Metres, PREMIER CRU was steadied to avoid the heels of KIWI DASH which when giving ground shifted in. Throughout the race, KIWI DASH raced wide and without cover. D Boeuf (TEAM WIN) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position today from the outside barrier. He said it was felt TEAM WIN would not finish today's race off if ridden in a forward position. G Mossé (WHATA FEELING) said he had not been issued with firm riding instructions prior to the race although it was his intention to lead if he could do so without being pressured. He said WHATA FEELING began only fairly, BRAVE COMMANDER which had drawn to his inside was immediately ridden along to go forward, he therefore rode along for a short distance in an attempt to go with that horse, but when it became apparent that he would not be able to cross that horse and lead, he elected to steady and follow BARFOLD HERO with cover. He said in his opinion to have ridden along vigorously in the early stages to obtain the lead would have been detrimental to the chances of WHATA FEELING considering it was carrying 132 lbs today as opposed to 122 lbs at its last start. Mr D A Hayes, trainer of WHATA FEELING, confirmed he had not issued specific instructions to G Mossé as the horse is well known to him. He said in the circumstances of today's race he felt WHATA FEELING was ridden appropriately as he would have been disappointed if G Mossé had made use of the horse under the big weight to lead. The explanations of G Mossé and Mr Hayes were accepted. C Williams (BRAVE COMMANDER) said initially Mr C Fownes, trainer of the horse, had instructed him to ride it in 4th or 5th position. He said Mr Fownes then added because today's track seemed to suit horses racing in a forward position, he should not be frightened to go forward and lead if he could do so at a reasonable pace. He said BRAVE COMMANDER began well and when WHATA FEELING which had drawn to his outside was not able to cross him, he then rode along to clear runners to his inside and shift to the fence in the lead. He said once obtaining the lead, he allowed BRAVE COMMANDER to travel at its own tempo, however, if he had at any stage been contested, he would have taken a sit on the horse. He said BRAVE COMMANDER was able to continue on unchallenged and seemed to appreciate being able to do so. PRETTY TRIO, BRAVE COMMANDER and JUSTINIAN were sent for sampling.
