Racing Incident Report
On jumping, SNIPPETYIYEA stumbled. When the gates opened, SPARKY got its head up and lost ground. EARL GREY was slow to begin. From the outside gate, STRATEGUS was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. Near the 1300 Metres, SPARKY became unbalanced after being dragged down behind when STRATEGUS which was following it clipped its heels. In the middle stages, SUGAR AND SPICE raced wide and without cover. After the 600 Metres, FORTUNE LIFE was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of SUGAR AND SPICE which at that time shifted in to obtain cover. Also after the 600 Metres, CZAR OF PRUSSIA dipped. On straightening, FORTUNE LIFE was bumped by SUNNY RIVIERA which was carried out by CZAR OF PRUSSIA. When questioned regarding his riding, G Schofield (WELL BEST) said his riding instructions were the same tonight as at the horse's most recent start. They were to take the horse back from its awkward gate in the early stages, endeavour to obtain a position as close as possible to the rail and ride the horse for luck in the Straight in the hope of getting it to finish off. He said in the early stages he took WELL BEST back, raced in a two wide position behind FORTUNE LIFE and in the Back Straight momentarily shifted to a three wide position, however, when FORTUNE LIFE shifted out into a three wide position near the 700 Metres, he elected to shift back to a two wide position. He did acknowledge after the 600 Metres there was an opportunity for him to improve his position to follow CZAR OF PRUSSIA, however, he did not do so as he was concerned SUGAR AND SPICE which throughout the race had seemed unbalanced may shift in and cause interference to him. He said because of this he continued to race near the rear, on straightening shifted back in towards the rail, rode his mount along hands and heels, near the 200 Metres hit it with the whip, however, when it failed to respond he then rode it out hands and heels until after the 100 Metres. He said at this time WELL BEST became unbalanced in its action and was not making ground, therefore he did not persevere in the run to the line. He added after the race he noted the plate on the left hind leg of WELL BEST was twisted and in his opinion this may have affected the horse's action in the Straight. Trainer C S Shum confirmed the riding instructions. He said the primary reason for issuing these instructions was the horse's awkward draw when racing over 1650 Metres, a distance at which it is suspect. He said in the past when racing over shorter distances WELL BEST had raced more prominently and if the horse were returned to a shorter distance from a favourable barrier, it would again be ridden more prominently. Mr Shum confirmed when WELL BEST returned to the unsaddling area he noted its left hind plate to be twisted which was confirmed by the Veterinary Officer. The Stewards told G Schofield his riding in the middle stages was of concern, he should at all times avail himself of opportunities to improve his position at critical stages of a race where circumstances permit and in slightly different circumstances he may have found himself in breach of a serious rule. He was told this ride was clearly not one of his better rides and not of the standard expected of a rider of his calibre. Mr Shum was told his explanation would be recorded. SPARKY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SPARKY after the race did not show any significant findings. FANTASTIC STAR and EARL GREY were sent for sampling.
